Cruise turns 60 next year and is right now enjoying the biggest hit of his career. And it’s not even a squeaker: Top Gun: Maverick broke his opening day record with a $51 million haul. His previous record was Mission: Impossible—Fallout’s $23 million.
You want to know why Tom Cruise is one of the few movie stars still standing? It’s not his looks or his agelessness or even his talent. There are all kinds of good-looking, talented, ageless actors and actresses out there… No, Tom Cruise is a star because he understands stardom in the same way John Wayne and Errol Flynn and Gene Kelly and Bette Davis and Warren Beatty and Jack Nicholson understood stardom… It’s not about you! It’s about the audience! Dazzle them. Make them laugh. Make them cry. Inspire them. Broaden their horizons. Show them something new. Teach them. But never, ever talk down to them or act as their superior.
Respect the audience as a partner, and you will never break up.
Tom Cruise puts on a helluva show.
OH HELP !!! HELP !!!
TOXIC MASCULINITY ON THE LOOSE !!!!
Masculine?
I thought this was a Tom Cruise movie.
I’m on a highway to the Un-Woke Zone!

Says the man who has been inside for 3 years to not a cold.
Actually, he is aging. He looks older. But, what's wrong with looking older and wiser?
Loved the tribute to the late Sam Shepard “The Right Stuff” scene too.
You just know this is going to be a damn good movie when he steals the SR71 to set a speed record.
Tough to see the failing Val Kilmer - really tough. He’s one some great movies too.

sounds like woke casting.
I’d see it but I can’t tolerate Tom Cruise. I do have a favorite Tom Cruise movie though; “The Last Samurai”. I like it because Ken Watanabi steals the movie from him.
“Maverick” had by far the most interest of older audiences of any film in the Covid era. A majority (55 percent) was over 35. That is far different from most top-grossing films, even in pre-Covid times. For the current environment, it is a major victory.
“Maverick” audiences were 37 percent 18-34, with 34 percent non-white (less than other top titles) and 58 percent male
Reed Hastings is taking note as to what works and what doesn’t.

Get WOKE - Go Broke
Actually, my favorite Tom Cruise movie is “Edge of Tomorrow’
Funny, with some pretty scary aliens.
I saw a review by a FReeper yesterday and he said he liked it, but his description sounded pretty woke with overly “diverse” cast and a mean-spirited female Hispanic and a dufus white guy. True? Otherwise, I’d like to see it.
But apparently, there’s no overt anti-Americanism in it. True?
My wife and I went to see Downton Abbey, which was pretty good. Surprised they got so many of the series regulars into the movie.
‘Rather than apologize for being an 80’s “relic,” it embraced what everyone loved in 1986 and still loves today.’
President Reagan was our President from 1981 to 1989.
He kicked the worthless/America hating Carter’s butt in the election and other dems in his political life.
President Reagan brought pride back in being an American back to our citizens.
President Reagan was not a racist nor a sexist, he was a proud American. That pride spilt over to many of us under President Reagan.
Besides working in good jobs, many of us got involved in volunteering with non profits, churches and good local organizations.
We maximized our 401 k’s which then enabled many of us to retire early and not depend on relatives to care for us.
I had finished my Navy active reserve time in the late 1960’s not wearing our uniform because of the hatred from Nam and the haters of America. We were told/ordered not to wear our uniforms to reserve meetings and our yearly 2 weeks of active duty.
During that time period with President Reagan, many of us woke up and realized how evil the democrats had become and anti American most of them were. By the end of that decade, I had no room in my life for hate filled democrats.
There were jobs everywhere for the good workers, who were trained and wanting to work.
LBJ’s Affirmative Action was held down, and now it has merged with the Woke Pyschos to make life miserable for many of us 24/7.
Under President Reagan, we could wear our military hats and put go Navy/Marines, USAF or go Army stickers on our pickups and sedans. Men and women Nam vets started wearing their military hats and jackets. They got thank yous instead of being spit on.
Thugs like Muammar Gaddafi learned not to pick/threaten our people in other parts of the world.
People in America, who wanted good jobs and had the skills were in demand.
Compare the Reagan Days to what we live in the Brandon Days, and it is easy to see how this movie is doing so well.
Saw it today.
Concur with the assessment above.
Pleased that the Japan and Taiwan flags were right where they belonged on his jacket.
Kudos to Val Kilmer for his efforts. Kinda wish Meg Ryan could have been there, but the story was advanced by her character’s absence.
(Anyone who knows... is Penny in Charlie’s house? It looks familiar.)
Wow, and there's all of Memorial Day itself to go!
I won’t pay to see it, just because they erased the Taiwanese flag.
