MALÉ — The roll-out of vaccinations to prevent COVID-19 infections rising in the Maldives is a good example of “vaccine equity in action” according to Catherine Haswell, the UN resident coordinator for the Indian Ocean island nation.
The Maldives had reported some 29,000 cases of the virus with 72 deaths up until April 29. As World Immunization Week comes to an end, Haswell explains how the UN has supported the authorities in the fight against the pandemic.
“The COVID-19 crisis has been difficult for Maldivians, resulting in widespread health and socioeconomic challenges. On April 15, 2020, just two months after my arrival in the country, the capital city Malé went into full lockdown following the first positive case.
As Malé is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, this was an important preventive measure, which had been considered in the government’s advanced planning and preparedness efforts.
It was also to mitigate the spread to the outlying 200 local islands. In many ways, the beautiful island geography of the Maldives has also been a major mitigating factor for slowing transmission.
The closing of Maldivian borders saw a significant economic shock, as international tourism directly accounts for over a quarter of the country’s GDP. The disruption affected children’s learning, jobs, home evictions, and threatened food security due to impacts on the global supply chain.

I posted the article in order to have reference to the photo. It blew my mind to see such a small crowded piece of realestate
“The COVID-19 crisis has been difficult for Maldivians, resulting in widespread health and socioeconomic challenges.”
The Maldives has a population of 380,000 with 29,000 COVID cases and only 72 deaths. Which equates to 7% of the population contracted COVID with a 0.24% fatality rate. That’s less than the common cold.
So how was this a crises and what was the challenge?

I don’t know and really don’t care.
The purpose was to post the photo of the super crowded island.

I wonder, are their people in the Maldives that have a revulsion to the word, “equity”? How about other countries around the world? “Equity” has become one of those hi-jacked words of Marxists, which is rather ironic given it meaning in capitalism and finance. These leftists cancel, destroy, and distort to the point that nothing has meaning, including life.
Sorry, no offense or criticism intended. Cool photo.
Ahhh...... a trite post can easily be seen as criticism when not intended.
I was browsing a news site and saw the photo...... i was astounded by the fact they had used what seems every square centimeter of land
(I presume they are metric),
“Equity” into the hopper, joining; “community”, “safety”, “hurtful/hateful”, ...
That is a great photo. I mostly know the Maldives from tourist shots of unspoilt tropical beaches. I had no idea what their capital looks like.
It looks like SimCity when you try to crowd as much as possible onto a small map.
The equity - everybody gets the vaccination, free of charge, regardless on immigration status.
Secret - the same as in the USA!
The global warming alarmists always mention this place as candidate of being erased. They have only 9 years left!
Covid numbers are not all calculated the same. Covid deaths in the US are people who died with Covid, not necessarily from it.
Maldives to Guam...hold my beer!

"So how was this a crises and what was the challenge?"
Challenge? Forget Covid: "According to latest studies...at such a rate of sea level rise, fifteen percent of the Maldives’ capital island of Malé would be submerged by 2025" (https://honors.libraries.psu.edu/files/final_submissions/3804) For the record!
Oh nos, that things gonna tip over!!!!
Thank you. I’m always interested in ‘places’. I went to maps to check it out and there is only an outline. I like to go satellite and check out the neighborhoods.
Based on satellite measurements, The Maldives are among the 70-80 % of coral islands which are gaining in size. The meme of south sea islands slipping beneath the waves turns out to be total unscientific fabrication. Furthermore, this has been known since the Voyage of the Beagle in the 19th century.
But what will that do for the fundraising?
