Video on youtube or at link
Twenty-six-year-old Kyle Burgess was on a 10-mile run on Saturday up Slate Canyon in Provo, Utah. He told the Deseret News that when he saw four cougar cubs on the trail, he took out his phone and started filming.
But when Burgess saw the young animals' mother come along, he knew he was in trouble. For the next six minutes, he recorded their encounter.
The mother cougar stalked him hissing, growling and threatening as Burgess backed away, keeping his eyes locked on her. Mostly, he alternated between yelling a stream of profanities at the mother mountain lion and calling the animal "dude."
"Dude, you're scary!" Burgess tells the animal at one point, adding: "You're a (bleep) scary kitty cat." A few minutes later, after she repeatedly lunges in Burgess' direction, he says, "Come on, dude, I don't feel like dying today."
Amazingly, Burgess came away totally unharmed after he picked up a rock and hurled it at her. According to the Deseret News, a local official with Utah's Division of Wildlife Resources, Scott Root, told Burgess: "You did awesome." But, Root added, people should consider not running alone on trails.
If you see cubs and no mother, don’t start filming. Walk away briskly and immediately. Doubly so for bears.
Video is about 6 minutes. Summary, swearing at a cougar won't discourage it. Throwing a rock did in this instance. He appears to continue forward seeing the first cub. Maybe stopping would have been better, but then most advice advises against retreating, which was effective here. After 6 minutes.
... at an earlier, happier, time, before this young man realized his life was in danger!
Let that be a lesson.
Always bring a wingman to the bar.
Looks like the cougar was just looking to protect her offspring. If she was truly on the hunt, the man would never know what hit him.
That was what I going to say.
“Wow. Those are cougar cubs. I better make myself scarce before mama decides I’m dinner.”
Yes. Escorted him out of her/her cubs territory.
It took him way too long to throw a rock but good for him.
Yes. It only appeared to be a few seconds from the cub on the video and mom’s arrival but he must have had time to see the cubs, stop and get his phone or camera going. Unless he was filming the entire run.
Go be pervy somewhere else.
exactly. Worse thing he could of done. makes me angry too as it is normal for the mothers to defend their young of any species. This idiot was making a huge error in behavior and now others fear cougars stalking and striking at them when out in the wild. And yes. Doubly so for bears. This guy was lucky. Hate to say it but that behavior deserved a smack down. Unfortunately it would have been one he wouldn’t have lived to learn his lesson.
I was hiking in the Cascades up on the WA state and B.C. border and rounded a sharp blind corner on a cliff side. Right there 10 ft away was a black bear and I scared him as much as he scared me. Thank GOD he bolted and ran because I had very few options and was about ready to unload in my shorts.
Nicely put.
Man Escapes Cougar: ‘Dude, I Don’t Feel Like Getting Herpes Today’
The In-laws has a place for a bit in the Mountains in panhandle of NC. A Neighbor called their version of the DNR and was asking about something big and agile kind like a light colored dog in their garbage. The response was almost; ya dummy you live on a mountain, it is a Cougar. I was paranoid as heck going for walks even on the roadways in the sub, always looking over my shoulder. Should have asked my FIL if I could strap on one of his sidearms. Read up on how they attack, you have no chance, catch them before they strike with a 45? maybe...
He calls a mother “dude” and speaks to it as if it understands English
Trail? That’s a dirt road.
