Looking for travel advice from Ohio to New Hampshire. I will be going through:
New York:
Buffalo
South of Rochester
Syracuse
Utica
Schenectady
Massachusetts:
Springfield
Worcester
Way west of Boston to Lowell:
New Hampshire:
Salem
Looking for information on places to avoid due to ANTIFA/BLM activity.
We will be day travelling only. Do any of our east coasters have any advice?
America has sunk so low that you can’t drive through our cities?
God save us.
Most of the Salem Halloween stuff is cancelled this year. Also the downtown area is a mask required zone so if you do walk around outside your supposed to be wearing a mask. Ridiculous of course....
Don’t wear a MAGA hat and stay out of active riot zones. There is nowhere in the northeast I would hesitate to go, although in any urban area anytime, anywhere, exercise situational awareness. Of course, I live in DC and there’s nowhere here I would hesitate to go, although hanging around on foot after dark in some areas is another question. Situational awareness.
Get an EZ pass as soon as you can. They are good everywhere except Oklahoma. Most states have walk-in sites where you can pick one up. EZ pass saves time AND money. Do it.
There have not been many problems in Boston outside of the downtown area where protestors go. The airport is near downtown, but in an ethnic neighborhood that is less likely to have anything to do with protestors.
Your biggest challenge in Boston is the traffic and how complicated the roads can be. Unless you have a good reason to visit the main part of the city it is easiest to go to and from the airport from the north, using US-1, Rt. 60, and Rt. 1A.
Get 86 in Pa, across the Southern Tier then up thru the Finger Lakes. Longer, yes, wildly more beautiful, absolutely. Far less boring, less traffic and fewer tolls on the thru-way.
My sister lives in western Mass, it’s nice all through there and the places you named off
Maybe I’m naive, but it seems weird/sad to factor in “BLM/Antifa” activity into travel plans, I think it’s been blown out of proportion for political purposes but it’s not reality. I mean yeah there’s white hipster liberals in those areas but it’s not like violent
Unless they run the tag and determine which rental company and who rented the car.
“Unless they run the tag and determine which rental company and who rented the car.”
If you have attracted that level of scrutiny, something is seriously wrong.
A big THANK YOU to all of your advice. You guys and gals are the best :).
Don’t you mean a Harris/Biden sticker?
You are totally wrong about WEST Roxbury..........a .very nice part of Boston.........
1. Ez-pass: you’re good all the way into new england. Note that NY is switching soon to overhead gantries; no tolls. They’ll bill your ezpass or bill you later.
2. Looking for cheap gas? by the time you get into NY, hit The Indian Res off exit 58 (east on U.S. 20 & Rt 5). On average 50 cents per gallon cheaper.
3. I-90 bypasses all major cities (touches only the outskirts of Albany).
4. Exit 35 outside Syracuse is a pretty good place to rest your head. It’s it place called Carrier Circle. Hotels; gas and grub all there. No reason for Burn-Loot-Murder to be hanging around there.
5. Service area restaurants are upwards of 20% higher than off the Thruway. For off the highway places for a sit down:
Exit 52E outside Buffalo
Exit 48A (Pembroke - 2 truck stops)
Exit 45 (Rochester - Victor)
Exit 35 (see above)
Exit 31 (Utica - Wal-Mart right off highway if needed)
Exit 24 ( can be used during non-peak times to bypass that dangerous bridge over the Hudson)
Exit B3 (last exit in NY before MA)
Note: No reciprocity in NY (keep guns and ammo separate). State boys are pretty good if don’t go over 75, or crazy lane changes.
MA: Service areas are not bad, but can’t suggest a good hotel until Worcester. In Mass, I’d stay on the highways (90, 95/128), and you should be fine.
ping me for more details if needed.

Some of the postings said this is done randomly. No scrutiny.
The Southern Tier Expressway, I-88 through southern NY is absolutely GORGEOUS.
I LOVE that drive.
Corning is a good place to stop. It’s a small city but very nice. And there’s the Corning Museum of Glass which is worth the stop at. it’s right off the interstate. Very easy to find.
True about PA roads always being under construction.
I don’t know if you can go through Canada these days.
The Thruway is pretty boring. I agree about 86.
I’d drive the STE more but we don’t go many places where it’s worth the extra time to go that way. The shortest route is usually the thruway.
