Personally I wouldnt set foot in any of the States on your list.
Family function, can't get out of it.

Im in RI, I would avoid Springfield, and also Hartford, CT if that is on your way. NH is laid back and very pretty if you take some of the backroads. Have you considered taking routes through the Berkshire region?
I'm only there for a family function, but if I vacation in that area, I'll take your advice.

Schenectady? Why?
Plotting the course on Google maps takes us through there on our way to Salem NH.

You will probably just go around Schenectady, which is a good thing. The only thriving area in what is called The Capital District is Saratoga County, a Republican County. Saratoga Springs is now mini-Nantucket, overtaken by wealthy liberals. Saratoga Race Course is still a destination city for August Thoroughbred racing.
A few miles North is The Adirondack Park, Lake George, etc.

So I've heard. Thanks for the advice.
I'm just an upper midwestern boy and not well travelled. The 'forward reconnaissance' I've gotten about these areas (from asking just a few questions) is fantastic.

Because our country has descended so quickly to a place where American citizens fear traveling to other states - with good reason.
Its an amazing transformation that we would not have surmised 6 months ago.
I find it difficult to accept.
