VANITY: Advice on travelling through New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts
Me ^ | 09/21/2020 | Me

Posted on 09/21/2020 2:37:06 PM PDT by farming pharmer

Looking for travel advice from Ohio to New Hampshire. I will be going through:

New York:
Buffalo
South of Rochester
Syracuse
Utica
Schenectady

Massachusetts:
Springfield
Worcester
Way west of Boston to Lowell:

New Hampshire:
Salem

Looking for information on places to avoid due to ANTIFA/BLM activity.

We will be day travelling only. Do any of our east coasters have any advice?

MA and NH don’t have the terrorist violence but Springfield MA has the usual city issues at night. Norman Rockwell’s Lenox MA exit 1 on I90 is beautiful, The Red Lion Inn is an historic gem, museum quality artwork, pool year round, great food and drinks on the porch. Rt 20e goes through the little towns if you get tired of i90..

My family and I had booked an Airbnb at Lake Titus for a ski vacation over the Christmas holiday. New York State’s Covid police policies has caused me to cancel. They will lose $thousands$. Screw em. Instead, we will book in Florida, sun-n-fun. They are open 4 business.

Buh-by, NY.

I live in southern NH, the Plaistow NH area. This is TRUMP country. Feel free to take exit 51B off 495N, lots of restaurants and gas stations in Plaistow, plenty of TRUMP 2020 signs everywhere, you’ll be perfectly safe.

I’d avoid Dover, Exeter, and any NH town with a large university if you have a TRUMP bumpersticker. Not that much violent “activism” happens there in NH, but a few younger people seem to be the most hostile.

At a mini-Trump rally we had in Hampstead on Sunday, most people honked & waved their support — but it was younger college age students that flipped the bird, acted crangry (crazy- angry).

“Crap, we have to go to the Boston airport to pick up the kids.”

If you’re going there first, just stay on the Mass Pike right through Boston to the airport. The airport is east of the city, you don’t have to stop or leave the highway in Boston. Then go back the way you came on 90 and take 93 north instead of 495 and it gets you to Salem, NH.

The girl child and I drove down to Lancaster County 3 weeks ago to get a surprise puppy for husband. No issues...even with all my state troopers stickers on the car. Naturally, shoot for Tappanzee bridge, check out Sleepy Hollow, avoid NYC. We attend farmers markets all over Central MA and Boston area with no issues. You are welcome at our farm for some fresh veg! Trump flags all over and mini Trump rallies in all neighboring towns. Freepmail me if you like ;)

It's 1h-40m out of your way, but straight north from Springfield, MA to Windsor, VT you will find the "American Precision Museum." If you like history, the industrial revolution, the technical founding of the USA, or are an engineer, you'll be like a kid in a candy store. We visited there probably 35 years ago and I still remember it. Fantastic place.

Stop at rural motels only after sunset and check out/leave before sunrise.

Wondering why this is so. Thanks.

Skip the NY Thruway. Take the Southern Tier route.

I live just outside of Lowell, Mass., and things are calm and quiet. Stay away from urban “downtown” areas, and you’re fine. As a rule of thumb, just never talk politics until somebody else breaches the subject, and be cautious afterward.

Take the “scenic route” as much as possible, and watch for the farm stands. The corn on the cob right now is delicious, along with tomatoes, local honey and everybody has maple, pumpkins and butternut. The scenery is good now, with spectacular just ahead in October.

Be cool about guns and you’ll breeze through. Keep it concealed and shut up. There is more support for Trump than you could ever dream possible in this bluest of blue regions, but be quiet about that, too. This is occupied territory, ok?

But relax and enjoy! New England has few tornadoes, earthquakes, wildfires, or hurricanes and just the occasional blizzard to dig out from under. High prices and Democrats suck, but hey! We get by!

Stay out of the metropolitan areas except for interstate travel, keep your ears to the local radio channels, you should be fine.

Don’t carry firearms without a concealed carry permit, and even then I would not carry in NY cities.

In that case I would particularly avoid West Roxbury/Roxbury, Mattapan, even Dorchester. A lot of gang activity and gang-related violence and a number of neighborhoods that you don’t want to end up in after dark. As for the rest of greater Boston, I’ve never been anywhere with more angry, explosive people, looking for any reason to honk, yell, swear, flip the finger, or tell you off. I’ve been screamed at for...Stopping at a red light. I’ve also been screamed at for going through a green light...By a guy who didn’t feel like stopping at his red light. That’s Boston.

There have been a couple of very nasty MVAs on the Thruway recently, with four fatalities.

I’d avoid the Thruway, too.

Pack a solid bat and know where your tire tool is.
Keep them both accessible.

If you’re passing through Schenectady then Nonna Maria’s on Route 9 around Grooms Rd. in Half Moon would be a good place to avoid rioting and mayhem. Just make sure you packed stretchy pants for the rest of the trip.
