Congress has awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, its highest honor, to surviving crew members of the USS Indianapolis, the ship that delivered key components of the first nuclear bomb and was later sunk by Japan during World War II.
The ship, with 1,195 personnel aboard, delivered enriched uranium and other parts of the atomic bomb Little Boy that was later dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, in August 1945.
Four days after delivering its top secret cargo, the ship was sunk by Japanese torpedoes on July 30, 1945. Of nearly 900 men who went into the Philippine Sea, just 316 survived before being rescued nearly five days later. The death toll of 879 was the largest single disaster at sea in U.S. Navy history.
Survivors were stranded in the open ocean with few lifeboats and almost no food or water, enduring severe burns, dehydration and shark attacks.

75 years on? WTF took so long? Not more than a handfull of the crew left alive.
I like the gesture. I like it.
yup, me too
It was a shame it took so long to officially vindicate Captain McKay.
Please excuse the free association. These fine men deserve to be remembered. Their personally unknown mission and sacrifice saved tens of thousands of American and Japanese lives and helped end the war.
I got a crazy idea. How about honor them by saving the nation that is currently under communist attack from China and from within? How about ending the damned national lockdown?
How about abolishing the treason filled FBI?
Long time coming...too long, but glad they’re recognized.
God bless em.

I agree that this should have been done long ago. But sometimes governments will wait a 50 years or more before awarding collective medals.
For example, in 2004 the French government awarded the Legion of Honor to all living Allied World War II veterans who could prove they served in France. That war had been over for 59 years.

Bingo!
These patriots gave everything for our freedoms. Most is lost now.
Pls honor them. At the same time, show ‘em we still care about the greatest nation on earth by halting the revolution happening right before our eyes.
Someone is behind this assault. The Bolshevik Revution had Lenin as their leader; all knew that. Chinese had Moa. Who is the the one waiting in the wings to come to power when this nation fails?
We all speculate Soros. But is that true?
I feel there are many ‘at the ready’ to assume power and start rounding up Patriots. Bammy???
DISCLAIMER...I am a tin foil hat conspirousy theorist.
The military veteran is always slighted.
"A couple sailors were peeling potatos on deck near where the bomb casing was welded to the deck (unarmed then).
One asked the other what that thing was...."The bomb we are delivering".
"Let's move away from it!"
My father, a WWII veteran who turns 95 on November 1, was in the Navy and helped rescue USS Indianapolis survivors. He has quite the stories.
Bless all those souls here and gone.
All the drowned sailers?
About f***ing time!!!
Amen, Sir, Amen!!!
I agree but that was twenty years ago and his name was McVay.
In October 2000, the United States Congress passed a resolution that McVay's record should reflect that "he is exonerated for the loss of the USS Indianapolis." President Clinton also signed the resolution.[21] Commander Hashimoto died five days before the exoneration (on 25 October).
It’s a little late. Is Peloosi trying to rescue her reputation after backing the rioters, looters and thugs?
Robert Shaw would be pleased.
Anyone see a list of who voted for it?
