U.S. Navy Cmdr. Ernest Krause is assigned to lead an Allied convoy across the Atlantic during World War II. His convoy, however, is pursued by German U-boats. Although this is Krause's first wartime mission, he finds himself embroiled in what would come to be known as the longest, largest and most complex naval battle in history: The Battle of the Atlantic.

The first Fletcher saw action in Naval Battle of Gudalcanal, Nov 1942. I do not understand why, with CGI able to reproduce any image, the producers don’t strive for complete accuracy. A Gleaves Class or Benson/Mayo Class would be accurate.

As an aside, ever since I was ten and built Revell’s The Sullivans I have thought the Fletchers the most aesthetically beautiful warships ever built.

I saw it last week. Meh. Most of the movie is CGI. Felt like I was watching Polar Express.

Too bad he’s a pedo. I really liked him as an actor until I saw his name on the list.

Yes, The Bedford Incident was excellent. The old kraut naval ossifer who was along for the ride showed a decent side... a good job of over-acting from Sidney Poitier too, and Richard Widmark typecast into the thick of the drama, as always, as a white-haired psycho.

My wife’s uncle (the one she never met) was lost off Guadalcanal night of November 12, 1942 when the USS Barton DD-599, a Benson class destroyer, was torpedoed.

Das Boot is definitely my favorite and it’s been so long that I need to watch it again. I think I’ve seen the 4 hr German version once but now I need to double check.

Agree. My grandfather was on a Fletcher for nearly the entire Pacific War: 1943-45. I’ve been to the Kidd in Baton Rouge. Beautiful ship.

Or you can watch on youtube the 1950s series about the war at sea: Victory at Sea Episode 1 Part 1. Dramatic music under. Announcer (deep Voice), "And now ... design for war". Cut to U-boat periscope rising from the ocean ...

never missed an episode as a kid, except when TV was on the fritz

Read it.

Run Silent, Run Deep is a great book, far better than the movie (which the author detested.)
