U.S. Navy Cmdr. Ernest Krause is assigned to lead an Allied convoy across the Atlantic during World War II. His convoy, however, is pursued by German U-boats. Although this is Krause's first wartime mission, he finds himself embroiled in what would come to be known as the longest, largest and most complex naval battle in history: The Battle of the Atlantic.

Damn you COVID19. This would have been worth a movie ticket to see on a big screen.

Early 1942 was known to the U-Boats as the “Happy Time”. By 1944 the tide had turned.

In the early part of the war, Admiral King disregarded the advice of the Royal Navy, who had been fighting the war longer, and were much better at ASW strategy and tactics than the Americans.

Tom Hanks is a big history buff. He was recently on Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History podcast.

Yeah.
I thought it was an OK action flick.
But just as I feared the Woke had to bring us absolutely cartoon Nazis.
The only interaction with them is the idiotic radio broadcasts to the Allied ship with them taking the time to trash talk them, “We are wolves coming for you Greyhound!”

What bullshit. Like the German subs would broadcast on the surface allowing the allied ships to get an EXACT bearing on the enemy ships.

Contrast this with the classic “Enemy Below” where the Germans were , smart and human.

I don’t know what it is but Hanks just is never a convincing enough character for me.

Did Tom wear a mask between scenes?

By coincidence I had re-watched Enemy Below just a few days before Greyhound was available. Both were worth the time, but Enemy Below is about as good as it can be. Mitchem is great, cinematography quality was a cut above anything they make now.

Enemy Below was turned into a Star Trek Episode that was a good one as well (Balance of Terror)

“ Tom Hanks is a big history buff. He was recently on Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History podcast.”
***********

The movie is pretty much factually correct. But, if you want more detail into the details the History Channel has devoted an hour documentary to it in their WWII series.

U Boat going toe-to-toe on the surface with two Fletcher Class DD’s in “early WWII?”

No way, no how.

Watch “Das Boot” for a realistic story about the Battle of The Atlantic.

“Contrast this with the classic “Enemy Below” where the Germans were , smart and human.”

Great flick.
However Das Boot sets the standard for U-boat movies.

Das Boot is an incredible film. Hard to beat. I recommend the 4 hour version (made for German television). So many great characters.

Tom Hanks may be a big history buff but he sure hasn’t learned from history.

The Kriegsmarine should have halted production of other U-boat types in 1943 and started mass production the Type XXI. The type XXI U boat could have been the game changer for the Krauts. Just like the jet aircraft were delayed these boats were a lost opportunity, thank God for the dumb decisions of the mad corporal.
