Wow! It is going to be amazing if there is not a death toll from this one.

MEXICO CITY (NEWS 1130) – Mexico City has just been rocked by a major earthquake. Readings vary, but Mexico’s National Seismological Service reported it as a 7.1 magnitude earthquake. The USGS’ readings put it at 7.4. NEWS 1130 ✔ @NEWS1130 JUST IN: Mexico's national seismological institute says a 7.1 magnitude earthquake has struck the southern state of Oaxaca. More to come. https://twitter.com/SismologicoMX/status/1275452560195739649 … Sismologico Nacional ✔ @SismologicoMX Preliminar: SISMO Magnitud 7.1 Loc. 12 km al SURESTE de CRUCECITA, OAX 23/06/2020 10:29:03 Lat 15.68 Lon -96.07 Pf 10 km 10 11:41 AM - Jun 23, 2020

People living in the Mexican capital say it lasted several seconds, and caused buildings to sway. It’s too early for any reports of damage or casaulties, but some images on social media show cracks in pavement. More to come. (from link above link)

Cocos Tectonic Plate moving north-east and subducting under the North American Plate at the Middle America Trench.

Earthquake's reported location is in the area of the 4th blue spike from the top, where the Mexican coast jogs in sharply.

Much of Mexico City is built on land fill over what used to be Lake Texcoco. Land fill doesn’t behave well in earthquakes.

hanamizu :" Much of Mexico City is built on land fill over what used to be Lake Texcoco.
Land fill doesn’t behave well in earthquakes."

As I understand it, land fill in a wet or moist area
acts like Jello (it wiggles) and is unstable.
