At no point did the pilots say they had a problem with their landing gear or any other type of emergency, according to the radio calls.
A deadly plane crash in Pakistan is prompting questions about how the crew could touch down without landing gear when their sophisticated jetliner was bristling with equipment to prevent pilots from doing just that
"It is unbelievable to me that an airline crew on a jet like an Airbus, with all the warning systems, would attempt to land the plane without the gear extended," said John Cox, an aviation safety consultant who formerly flew the A320 as a U.S. airline pilot.
It's not yet clear why the two jet engines quit after functioning well enough for about two minutes to lift them about 3,000 feet (915 meters) above the runway. Engines have become so reliable that losing two at the same time is almost always because of some common factor, such as damage from hitting a runway or a problem with the fuel supply.
"We are comfortable. We can make it," the pilot can be heard telling the controller, according to a recording of Karachi's air-traffic radio posted on the LiveATC.net website.
"Sir, we have lost engines," a pilot said. Then, 30 seconds later, he said, "Mayday. Mayday. Mayday."

Pakistan’s Minister for Civil Aviation Ghulam Sarwar Khan told reporters on Thursday the plane’s engines touched the ground three times on the first attempt at landing.
“The pilot never announced his landing gear wasn’t opening. He haphazardly touched the engines thrice with the ground,” Khan said.
“All marks are present [on the runway]. He was not at the proper height ... Control tower informed him you aren’t at the required height, lower your altitude,” he said, adding that the pilot replied, “I will manage.”
According to communications posted on liveatc.net, an aviation radio monitoring website, the pilot told the controllers “we are comfortable now” during the approach, but the reason for the remark has left most experts puzzled.
Shortly after the engines scraped along the runway in the aborted first landing attempt, the pilot reported problems in maintaining altitude, then said both engines had failed.
Investigators are expected to examine whether the engines shut down because of their collision with the runway, following what appeared to be a steeper and faster approach than normal.
The lower part of the engine housing contains key components including an accessory gearbox and hydraulic pumps.
“All sorts of things can happen to an engine if you bounce it down the runway,” a person familiar with its design said.
That’s 203 mph. Normally, a passenger jet aircraft such as this one (A320) lands at about 140 knots (161 mph).

Maybe the pilots were on their prayer rugs?
Did a few touch and goes with the gear up and then put the gear down just in time to land on the buildings.
