An Unsolicited Commencement Speech - Mike Rowe

Posted on 05/24/2020 4:45:04 PM PDT by Jamestown1630

I'm a long-time fan of Mike Rowe, and happened last night to see his recent 'Unsolicited Commencement Speech'. (I searched, and couldn't see if anyone else had posted this; apologies if someone already has):

I would say that Mike Rowe is a National Treasure....but I would be selling him WAY SHORT.

I especially appreciated his message at the end, that people who choose the trades don’t have to forego a liberal arts education.

I attended University for a while; but issues intervened, and I was spending most of my time in the Library, following my own curiosity, anyway. I’m grateful for what I did learn from brilliant Professors during my short time at Uni; but the most valuable education I’ve received has come from Real Life, and from my natural impulse toward ‘autodidacticism’ :-)

(One great benefit is that you don’t come out with the sort of generational ‘hive mind’ that so many young people do, today.)

Very, very good.

I have a nephew who became a skilled machinist.

He is well paid, has not been laid off, has a wife, two children, a lovely home and 25 acres within an hour of his work.

Living the dream!

His thinking is truly American without indicating any political bias. He lives by true American values and virtue.

Thank you for posting. I saw this the other day. EXCELLENT.
As another person said, this man is certainly a National Treasure.

I sincerely wish all those who do the dirty work and labors would get the recognition in society they deserve. That is one silver lining to this whole boondoggle, people are waking up to the value of trades and jobs that make lives better for us all.

Mike Rowe is great. I also find it amusing to see the so called “educated” among us are calling jobs such as grocery bagger, shopping cart gatherer, burger flipper, welder, mechanic etc etc etc heroic as if they only now discovered that such people actually exist. But once this is over they will go back to their necessary jobs and forget about the newly found heroes that only lurk in the shadows of their world.

I watched and enjoyed this (love Mike Rowe). The fact that he pointedly mentioned that among all the celebrity speeches to high school seniors and college seniors that none were directed to trade school graduates was a damning indictment of their view of the world.

I’ve been very grateful to the various people who have delivered food and packages to me of late. But my gratitude isn’t anything new.

A few years ago, the water tank in my apartment broke with a sound like a pistol shot. I thought it was a canned item in the pantry ‘popping’ it’s top - until I saw water seeping out of the HVAC closet and beginning to flood my entire small space.

I live at the top of a high building; and this happened at midnight, on a night when the elevators were not working. One of the maintenance guys - an older, out-of-shape African man - walked up all 8 long flights of stairs; fixed my tank so it wouldn’t leak anymore; and then walked up again with a dehumidifier.

Within two days, my place was dry, new tank, and no real damage done.

I can’t imagine the damage, if someone so conscientious hadn’t been willing to help me after midnight.

We can’t live without these people - especially those who make the effort to become expert in their fields, and exercise such a superior sense of personal responsibility.

(Too bad that so many University-educated ‘journalists’ have no such concept of personal honor, these days.)

I met a 2020 female graduate yesterday who will be attending a 2 year welding program the fall. I just sent this video to her. My granddaughter will be attending college this Fall to get a 4 year degree in Psychology. What a colossal waste.

Mike Rowe has a great podcast “The Way I Heard It.” Fans should begin at the beginning. Also a book by the same name.

Not necessarily a ‘colossal waste’. It will depend upon her personal genius and wisdom to judge between truly proven science and propaganda.

Many psychologists have historically done a great deal of good in the world.
