Mike Rowe is great. I also find it amusing to see the so called “educated” among us are calling jobs such as grocery bagger, shopping cart gatherer, burger flipper, welder, mechanic etc etc etc heroic as if they only now discovered that such people actually exist. But once this is over they will go back to their necessary jobs and forget about the newly found heroes that only lurk in the shadows of their world.

I watched and enjoyed this (love Mike Rowe). The fact that he pointedly mentioned that among all the celebrity speeches to high school seniors and college seniors that none were directed to trade school graduates was a damning indictment of their view of the world.

I’ve been very grateful to the various people who have delivered food and packages to me of late. But my gratitude isn’t anything new.

A few years ago, the water tank in my apartment broke with a sound like a pistol shot. I thought it was a canned item in the pantry ‘popping’ it’s top - until I saw water seeping out of the HVAC closet and beginning to flood my entire small space.

I live at the top of a high building; and this happened at midnight, on a night when the elevators were not working. One of the maintenance guys - an older, out-of-shape African man - walked up all 8 long flights of stairs; fixed my tank so it wouldn’t leak anymore; and then walked up again with a dehumidifier.

Within two days, my place was dry, new tank, and no real damage done.

I can’t imagine the damage, if someone so conscientious hadn’t been willing to help me after midnight.

We can’t live without these people - especially those who make the effort to become expert in their fields, and exercise such a superior sense of personal responsibility.

(Too bad that so many University-educated ‘journalists’ have no such concept of personal honor, these days.)
