Physician Complicity in the Holocaust: Reflections on Emergency Medicine in the 21st Century

Physician complicity in, and indeed responsibility for, certain Nazi crimes against humanity has been well documented in books and treatises by historians and other scholars. The Nuremberg Doctors’ Trial provided the first public examination of these acts, but has subsequently been criticized for its narrow focus on a relatively small number of defendants.

For the better part of 50 years, mainstream medical literature all but ignored this subject (a notable exception being the article by Leo Alexander, a physician consultant at the Nuremberg trial, which appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1949. Part of this agnosia was the result of a well-orchestrated effort by the German medical establishment, organizations such as the World Medical Association, governments (including that of the United States) that absorbed and even recruited former German Nazi scientists, and others to put the issue of physician complicity to rest with the end of the Nuremberg trials.

The forging of new alliances with the advent of the Cold War also contributed to a decided preference for leaving the past behind. Perhaps apathy developed because as the United States took over the mantle of free-world leadership, we became comfortable with the notion of ‘‘it can’t happen here’’ or ‘‘it couldn’t happen again.’’ Unfortunately, unspeakable acts of genocide have happened again and again.

In recent years, medical publications have examined the role of physicians in the atrocities perpetrated during the rule of the Third Reich in Germany in the 1930s and 1940s. None, however, has examined the implications of these events in relationship to emergency medicine...

“Complicity’ would have been here better elaborated upon - as to the seemingly mundane activity supporting the Nazi Government’s actions.

German Doctors who were mandated to ‘classify’ their patients as to their racial identity by the state is it being included there ? The huge numbers of ordinary doctors in Germany carried out THAT activity, and did it according to German Law AT THE TIME.

Consider that with Abortion in America, so many doctors and other medical personnel and even HR departments at companies are ‘complicit’ simply by a process of referral in that murder of the unborn — Which may very well, in the future, be properly counted as the biggest mass-murder in human history.

All American medical physicians and associated personnel should be made aware of THEIR ‘complicity’ in this monstrous crime against humanity.
