Spock's Vulcan salute should replace handshakes in coronavirus era
CNET ^ | Mar 5 2020 | Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

In this era fraught with coronavirus worries and new advice coming seemingly every day, I'd like to propose a new replacement for the germ-filled handshake. Let's revive Mr. Spock's Vulcan salute from Star Trek, a simple and sanitary gesture that's just as useful as a handshake greeting, and 10 times more charming.

Even if you're not a huge Star Trek fan, you likely know the gesture. Actor Leonard Nimoy, who died in 2015, invented it himself. The actor would raise his hand with the palm facing forward, thumb extended, and his middle and ring finger parted. It's often accompanied with the spoken words "live long and prosper," sometimes paired with the words, "peace and long life."

I got another salute for you that only involves 1 finger.

Some SJW will probably consider it racist. Or something.

Great idea. Some might confuse it with the Priestly Blessing, however.

Just talked about this the other day on another topic. It was invented by rabbis. Nimoy lifted the blessing sign from them and made his own as the Vulcan Salute.

Nimoy DID NOT invent that. He is Jewish. He told people that he saw the sign at a religious ceremony when he was a boy and he incorporated it into his character for the show.

Very many people cannot perform that sign with their hands. I am one of those who cannot.

It is not quite as original a gesture as claimed. Leonard Nimoy got the gesture from a Jewish ritual.

What kind of girly man can’t make a vulcan hand gesture? Guess you need to stick to the one finger salute.

I used to drive a school bus and have observed that some car drivers really appreciated the job that school bus drivers do and would give us the 'you're number one' sign. I think though, that some are confused, as many of these drivers used their middle finger instead of their index finger. Obviouly, a sure sign of respect, I guess! 🤣

I for one cannot even do that with my hands. My Trekie hubby and sons all laugh when I would try. So I guess that my only option is to just do the princess wave.

An SJW would find its Jewish origins and call it a Zionist oppressor hand signal.

I’ve been doing this salute all along, instead of a hand wave or a “V” with two fingers. Great while riding bicycle or even just out walking, and while parting with someone.

The “one-finger” salute is just rude.

Yeah except Spock didn’t think of it first.

It’s a Jewish thing, (someone help me out here, please) Leonard Nimoy had the idea of co-opt ing it into the Vulcan stuff.

So yeah, let’s all do it. It will annoy the right people.

I found Spock to be pretentious. So I’m going with the Mr. Bean hand wave.

I watched a couple of movie/epis of an Italian cop show that takes place in the late 1930s through the end of the WWII.

They framed the fascist salute as a way of avoiding communicable diseases in a couple of the first episodes.
