US restaurants are REMOVING their dining rooms because so many customers are ordering food through delivery and pickup apps

A Chopt Salad opened in New York on Tuesday without tables or cash registers Customers can order and prepay online with the option for delivery or pickup

Chick-fil-A Inc has similar sites in Nashville and Louisville

More restaurants are turning to these so-called dark, virtual or ghost kitchens

Restaurants are doing away with dining rooms as consumers increasingly order food deliveries through apps such as Uber Technologies Inc's Uber Eats and GrubHub Inc.

The newest Chopt Creative Salad Co location, which opened Tuesday in New York, is unlike any of the chain's other 61 sites. It has no cash registers or tables for customers.

Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A Inc has similar sites in Nashville and Louisville, where customers order and prepay online with the option for delivery or pickup.

Chick-fil-A is also trying something different, opening three pilot 'delivery kitchens' this year - in Chicago, Los Angeles and near San Francisco. The latter is run by delivery platform DoorDash Inc.

A sign of the times. Perhaps ordering out so they can eat in pleasant, non-threatening surroundings that are called home. And get back on Tinder or other online pursuits?

Don’t have to have restrooms for customers either.

Well, if they see growth in delivery/carry out business, I can see why it’s happening.

personally, when eating out, we enjoy going to sit down restaurants, and enjoy sitting in a nice dining room and enjoying the time and food away from home. I would not want to order from a favorite restaurant and have it delivered, personally.

I guess I’m thinking, at least for people like me, there is still a big market for the restaurants with dining rooms where you can sit and enjoy the experience.

Fast food is different; there’s no great ambiance or enjoyment of the experience in the McDonald’s dining room, if you want to call their interior space a dining room.

Perhaps they want to avoid THIS kind of social intercourse?

I’d imagine the financial model is compelling. Location cost should be less (non-premium location, less square footage, etc.), lower staff costs, insurance costs, etc.

Now with Door Dash you can order delivery from many good restaurants that aren’t fast food. It’s really nice when you’re in the mood to get something fast and stay in to watch a movie.

I still like dining out too so it’s great to have choices. But Door Dash is so impressive. You get texted to confirm the order, name of your driver, when they pick up your food, and can track their route to you. One night we were watching TV and said wow nachos sounds good. It was 10 PM. We had two types of nachos in our kitchen by 10:30 PM! It was really fun.

I think the real issue is having to deal with workers who are in a ‘work mode.’ They’d rather be somewhere else and you can sense the robotic vibe they give.

Could be having to deal with panhandlers while parking.

And according to stories out there, you have the pleasure of knowing that your meal has already been sampled for quality, taste, etc.

Overpaid employees with bad attitudes...
Homeless shooting up drugs and bathing in the restrooms...
Fist fights and mayhem over rediculously stupid stuff...
Lawsuits and legal threats over more rediculously stupid stuff...
Cleaning up after filthy patrons...

Action <-—> Reaction

There seems to be room for all in the food industry.

As long as Wisconsin Supper Clubs don’t start closing, and there’s still a Taco Cart somewhere in the world, I can live with more competition in a Free Market. :)

The Chinese in America got there first. I saw minimal minimized size Chinese restaurants even 25 years ago that you knew had been able to cut way down on their rent and were 100% take out oriented. Maybe zero or four tables where you could haul your Styrofoam take out box and "eat in"... no waitress of course. Toss in their trash barrel when done like at Micky Dee's.

A few years ago I went to a takeout only Dominoes pizza... But you could get hot slices there too. Domino's is OK hot off the griddle.

But do they adjust the price? The extra you pay in sit down restaurants is for the ambiance of watching waitress buns wiggle. I wouldn’t pay the same price without this. lol

Of course would be raysis to point out that Denny’s, Waffle House and IHOP could be hardest hit.

Don’t have to have restrooms for customers either.

A benefit of not having a dining room is they don't have to comply with the law that mandates public restrooms.
