US restaurants are REMOVING their dining rooms because so many customers are ordering food through delivery and pickup apps

A Chopt Salad opened in New York on Tuesday without tables or cash registers Customers can order and prepay online with the option for delivery or pickup

Chick-fil-A Inc has similar sites in Nashville and Louisville

More restaurants are turning to these so-called dark, virtual or ghost kitchens

Restaurants are doing away with dining rooms as consumers increasingly order food deliveries through apps such as Uber Technologies Inc's Uber Eats and GrubHub Inc.

The newest Chopt Creative Salad Co location, which opened Tuesday in New York, is unlike any of the chain's other 61 sites. It has no cash registers or tables for customers.

Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A Inc has similar sites in Nashville and Louisville, where customers order and prepay online with the option for delivery or pickup.

Chick-fil-A is also trying something different, opening three pilot 'delivery kitchens' this year - in Chicago, Los Angeles and near San Francisco. The latter is run by delivery platform DoorDash Inc.

And according to stories out there, you have the pleasure of knowing that your meal has already been sampled for quality, taste, etc.

I’ve been using Postmates and the bags have, so far, always been sealed up.

But, re: the sampling and such, that goes on in the restaurants by the wait staff too.

“when eating out, we enjoy going to sit down restaurants, and enjoy sitting in a nice dining room and enjoying the time and food away from home. I would not want to order from a favorite restaurant and have it delivered, personally.”

Same here. It’s not always only about the food, it’s the experience, too.

In my current position I travel about 40-50% of the time. I sometimes get a pizza delivered but I don’t think I’d consider getting a steak dinner delivered. I want it piping hot from the kitchen and delivered to my table where I can eat and walk away.

Outback Steakhouse is now offering home delivery service. I tried it once and it’s not worth it. The steaks are way too expensive then there is a $5 delivery charge and then the expected tip.......

Over 25% of home delivered meals have part of the order eaten by someone, usually the driver. I’ll pass.

I only order from restaurants I’ve frequented. I think you really never know a lot of things whether you dine in or get take out.

I refuse to live in fear. I’d be in trouble if you knew my imagination. ;)

Chick-fil-A is in San Francisco? I bet liberal snowflakes protest their presence constantly.

>>increasingly order food deliveries

The Papa Gino's/D'Angelo's chain in the Northeast closed down close to half their locations about a year ago. Papa Gino'a pizza was still halfway decent though the subs shrank in size/too expensive...and those who did go in wound up taking it to go. Why pay for a property with table space etc if people aren't going to stay and eat?

Rent is the bigger issue - both for the space and what rent costs in coastal areas to keep employees.

Chic filet should be smart and do delivery to dorms one hour later than everybody else and force lib kids to order it

Most places, except higher-end restaurants, make you police your own trash and trays. And still insist on a tip in many cases when you pay.

Like many things in China, they have taken the whole “Uber Eats” (although they don’t have Uber) to an extreme. The high density of Chinese cities means many restaurants now exist that are merely industrial kitchens. The don’t serve walk-in customers. They have a web-presence and extensive menu. In fact, they may advertise themselves several different restaurants, with completely different food styles, but they are all prepared at the same place. And they have army of cheap delivery people on moter-scooters tearing around town, with penalties on the drivers if they don’t arrive in a strict delivery period.

Like all those places with signs saying “OPEN...Chinese Food” didnt exist until millenials and Uber Eats found each other.
However this is one more unanticipated outcome of $15 minimum wage.

I enjoy having a nice dinner out now and then, too-and living in a rural area, I’m spoiled by the farm-to-table restaurants owned and operated onsite by the farmer who produced the food-nice atmosphere, candle light, well-prepared all organic/free ranged menu items, steaks grilled to your preference, good wine selection, excellent service-and since there are no burgers, hot dogs, french fries, etc, there are also no little kids whining, running around etc-which is great.

The last time I went out to eat in the city-50 miles away-my guy took me to a nice restaurant there-between the shouted conversations, yelling kids and bright lights-and the check-nearly twice as expensive as the same menu items at the farm to table-it was a total rip-off-won’t be doing that again-I’ll stick with the farm to table for my rare-cooked steak...

If that is what passes for a pleasant dinner in the city, I can see why people would rather get the meal to go/delivered and eat it at home...

I can easily believe the whole scenario on this...that you described. Blade Runner 3 should be set in Shanghai.
