The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is trying to figure out how one its vehicles ended up empty in a ditch nearly 2 hours away.
A Burnett County deputy found it outside of Spooner over the weekend. The SUV was discovered off to the side of County Road G in Rusk Township.
On Saturday night, a deputy from Burnett County, Wisconsin happened upon the abandoned vehicle. After checking the plates, the deputy realized it wasn't just any vehicle, it was registered to Hennepin County and assigned to a law enforcement officer.
Sources confirmed it's Major Bob Staupe, a member of the command staff and a longtime deputy.
Hennepin County confirmed Staupe was on-call that night, meaning he was responsible for responding to any major emergency that happened in Hennepin County, which is 100+ miles away from where it was found.

Fargo 2
Coming to theaters, July, 2020.
This time it really IS based on a true story!
These events will become more common once fully autonomous vehicles are available.
Many many years ago I was a manager in a business that had a lot of service trucks.
They were supposed to take the trucks directly home after work—no stops, no excuses. The company’s phone number was on all the trucks.
Sure enough—they quickly became a traffic hazard in the parking lot of the local bars during happy hours—the regular bar customers called me to complain! ;-)
Cops investigating other cops? Hilarious..
Many years ago Al Gore predicted that Global Warming would cause sheriffs to drive their vehicles into ditches. Al Gore has been proven right, yet again.
“Sources confirmed it’s Major Bob Staupe, a member of the command staff and a longtime deputy.”
Does Major Bob enjoy a little drinkiepoo now and then, by any chance?
I would be willing to go way out on a limb and opine that it was driven into the ditch by Major Bob Staupe. Or it could have been taken over by space aliens, or perhaps the man in the moon could have left it there. Or per chance, it could have driven itself into the ditch.
Ah-ha! The game is afoot!
“Property records show Staupe owns a cabin nearby on a lake”
There was an unwritten rule on my railroad that you never, ever parked your RR work truck in front of the tavern, only in the back where it wasn't so likely to be seen by management.
Oh for forck’s sake. You aren’t thinking that the Major did something wrong, are you? Well, I figure at the end of a 17-month investigation we will have the answer.
Now that I said that, I wonder if this guy is like 13 months from retirement.
Congressional comity demands: Was Trump in MN???
Alcohol or other drug would be my first guess. Ill also throw in a possible rendezvous with someone other than the Missus.

Seems the good Major admitted to drinking, driving, and ditching his vehicle. They demoted him to LT. Heck I want to know if they charged him.
