Gun Selling Advice

Posted on 09/23/2019 3:53:46 PM PDT by Mean Daddy

I have a handgun I'd like to sell to get a different model. Since so many websites are anti-gun (e.g.: Craigslist) what other options are there?

I'm not a dealer, so Gun Broker isn't the best option with fees, FFL to FFL transfers plus I have approximately 1,000 rounds I'd like to sell as well.

Thought about flea markets but not sure I can just walk into one and sell or trade. My goal is to stay in state to avoid the FFL to FFL transfers but want to do it legally.

What are my options or what am I missing?

Thank you.

I would need to know what state you live in in order to give you advice. Some states require background checks for private sales. The best advice I can give you is to go to a local gun dealer and solicit advice.

You can get a hammerless .380 for well under $200, and it will be a good gun.

If you are still in Iowa, go to a gun show and sell it to whoever wants to buy it and looks presentable. If it makes you feel better, take a photo of their driver license. Or like others have said, most FFL dealers will trade with you. But at a gun show, there will be several dealers all at one location so you can go for the best deal. As for the ammo, pin a sign to a backpack and walk around the gun show. Truthfully, there aren’t many shady characters who go to gun shows and there is almost always a police presence.

I am not knowledgeable, but Google helps in searching.

I checked into a couple and all are willing to wheel and deal but without the ammo as they can’t resell it. One guy will take it in a trade but with the ammo thrown in. By my estimation, the gun and ammo are worth collectively around $700 - 800 but the value they offered was for a new revolver worth around $300-350.

I’m old enough to remember going to a hardware store and buying my first shotgun.

Can't be too careful. Could be a sleeper account trying to trick an unsuspecting FReeper into doing something legally. Fortunately, there are no unsuspecting FReepers. ;)

It’s all good and no problem. I’ve leveraged Freepers on similar issues because there are a lot of knowledgeable people on the board. I mostly lurk anymore but will occasionally post something that I find relevant.

What is the gun and it’s condition? People on this site can give you a good idea of it’s true value.

Meet at a Walmart parking lot with an armed friend staying in the car.

Depends somewhat on what kind of gun you've got. What do you have? If it's a first generation Colt SAA or other collectible, you'll get the best dollar from gunbroker.

If you were to sell on gunbroker, the buyer pays the shipping fees from FFL to FFL. You pay the gunbroker fees, but they aren't that bad, considering the exposure you get.

Selling off armslist can be tricky. Locally, sellers have gotten a combination of genuine and counterfeit dollars. And, does IOWA allow private party transactions?

Not much info for a decent response.

Thanks for the armslist.com recommendation, I’ve been trying to sell a Glock accessory without any luck here at the local gun stores.

Springfield XD-40. I’ve probably put 100-200 rounds through it.

That is a good gun but .40 cal. are out of favor right now. A whole lot of police trade ins on the market from depts. going back to 9mm. In other words there is a bit of a glut of them on the market.

I really would keep it. It makes a great house, pickup or even carry piece.
