Massachusetts Race Postponed Due to Rare Mosquito-Borne Virus. Should You Worry?
Runner's World ^ | September 06, 2019 | Jordan Smith

While mosquitoes are often associated with West Nile virus, there is another mosquito-borne virus that is currently making headlines: the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus, a rare disease that can cause inflammation in the brain (called encephalitis). It mainly affects people in parts of the Great Lakes region, along the Eastern seaboard, and the Gulf Coast.

Now, a fifth case in humans has just been confirmed in Massachusetts, and EEE activity has been detected in 10 counties there, according to the Massachusetts Department of Health.

As a result, many outdoor activities in areas of concern have been canceled or postponed, including a 5K in Medway, Massachusetts, which was scheduled for August 31.

“On Thursday, August 29th, the Department of Public Health placed Medway in a critical risk level, and soon after, the town of Medway instituted an outside activity curfew of 6 p.m.,” a spokesperson for the Medway Police Association told Runner’s World. “Due to the severity of the issue, the race organizers determined that holding the race would pose too great a risk to our runners, volunteers, sponsors, vendors and event staff.”

The event will be rescheduled for mid-to-late October, and will be announced as soon as it is finalized. Information can be found on the race website.

In the meantime, should you worry about EEE when you are about to go on a run? Here’s what you need to know. What should you know about Eastern equine encephalitis?

Like the West Nile virus, EEE is an arbovirus—arthropod-borne virus—meaning it is spread by mosquitoes. Black-legged mosquitoes circulate the EEE virus in the environment, and it’s transmitted to humans through other “bridging” mosquito species.

YEAH IT’S A BIG PROBLEM- LIKE DOWN SOUTH, THERE IS LITTLE DATA ON HOW MANY PROPEL ARE AFFECTED- BUT i’M SURE THE TICKS MIGRATED SOUTH OVER HTE YEARS- AND PEOPLE DOWN THERE ARE GETTING ‘MYSTERIOUS ILLNESSES’ (woops cps locl) which they attribute to the ‘wastebasket diagnosis’ of ‘fibromyalgia’ or ‘chronic fatigue’, but i know when folks there asks “Could it be lyme disease’ docs will say ‘nope- don’t have it around here yet’- at least that’s how it used to be- years ago0- maybe it’s different now that more and more cases have been proven in those states-

They scream about the false ‘opioid crisis’, but we have a real crisis unfolding with lyme’s disease brewing in this country- (and it’s not just lyme’s disease- there are several more equally devastating diseases that ticks carry- which are really gaining in numbers of cases). I wish hey put some Serious effort into eradicating it or at l east slowing it way way down-

A friend died of Lyme disease here in Missouri. The seed ticks are hard to see and there are millions of them, in our yard alone.
I guess it’s time to move underground like they so in some of those scifi movies.

A possum eats thousands of ticks. We saw none until someone hit the possum we had on our land. Then ticks everywhere.

I have had two tick infections in the past three years. Previously I had fifty years of hundreds of bites every year without problems.

Doxycycline is cheap- a 10 day course is about 20% the cost of a tick panel.

The local practitioners have taken to prescribing doxy based on exposure and symptoms.

Millions(in New England) would have to die before DDT is taken off the #$%- list.

***Anyone remember when VEE (Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis) swept up from South America, through Mexico and into the US back around 1993-94***

WOOPS! I got the dates wrong! I did not proofread. the actual dates should be 1963-1964, thirty years earlier.

Why do I have a suspicion that the properties owned by the elites have no disease and are treated with DDT brought in on their private jets?

We have problems with west mile here in Louisiana. In my parish there are people dying from it sadly.

It's a fact of life. They are here and we stay wet.

However, we have chosen not to let them spray us any longer because it was only killing and maiming animals and humans more than mosquitos.

But like all 7 headed monsters they keep trying to push that bottomless pit of money they'd get from us on us again and again at the ballot box.

We, however, are tenacious and go right back up there with a big F U and hell no.

good point- I’ll bet they do that while the rest of us peons get the diseases- in some areas, like long island I’ve heard- people get it just walking out their front door (if they have any grass they have to cross- it’s so bad there- I’ve talked with folks that have had it numerous times from there-

The diseases from ticks are no joke- it doesn’t matter how fit a person is- it will strike them down very fast- loggers are very physically fit- but I’m sure many are getting knocked down by the vile creatures ticks-

I did not know that- I know guinea foul eat a ton- as do chickens- not sure if you have the land for it- but chickens can i guess really keep down on them- I’m noticing more folks are getting guinea fouls in our area- (usually on farmlands)

But like you noticed- ticks are spreading very very quickly- even up into States like Maine, where it’s traditionally very cold in winter months- The dang things are unstopable without some kind of method to slow them down- if DDT can do it then let’s use it- this is turnign into a major health crisis-

I knew a couple who’s horse died of it- well, actually it had to be put down it was suffering so bad- but i don’t think it would have made it anyways- I didn’t think animals coudl get it but apparently they can-

Sorry to hear of your friend- I’ll bet a good number of folks with compromised immune systems and such, or just poor health, die, and it never gets diagnosed as lyme disease or some other tick bourne illness- The reports likely call the deaths ‘due to natural causes’ because their hearts give out or something- but this is a direct link to lyme’s attacking the system and the person not being strong enough to fight it off-

It’s maddening that they are going after opioid prescriptions calling it a crisis, even though less than 2% of people that don’t misuse it ever get hooked on them- but they won’t do anything about ticks- Like chickensoup mentioned before, I’ll bet the elite’s grounds are all treated to combat ticks- They know they have a real crisis on their hands, but you don’t hear hardly anything about that because they aren’t willing to use the one thing that can stop it-
