Do Airport Insiders Pose a Threat to Air Travelers?

Currently, more than 1 million U.S. airport workers possess badges giving them some level of access to secure areas of the airports in which they work. These “SIDA badges” (SIDA is an acronym for “Security Identification Display Area”) are issued to airport workers after completion of a security background check. … the level of initial background check scrutiny given to prospective airport and airline employees can be a source of concern.

To save money – because the background checks and security clearance investigations described above can cost a great deal – most airport workers undergo much more limited vetting. This group of “exempt” employees includes baggage handlers, aircraft cleaners, mechanics, caterers and fuelers, all of whom have regular, unmonitored, and unescorted access to airliners.

Generally, hopeful airport and airline workers and vendor employees undergo only a check of the FBI’s criminal history database as well as a simple drug test after filling out a questionnaire. These checks are typically left to an airport’s security badging and access office. Checking of a prospective employee’s references and employment history and U.S. work eligibility is the responsibility of the individual employer. Besides cutting down on time needed to process this kind of vetting, it’s also far more affordable for airports and employers, as they’re charged for the cost of such investigations.

Given the above limited-scope background investigations most airport insiders undergo, it’s easy to see how personal vulnerabilities can be exploited. Some airport workers may have serious financial problems which open them up to blackmail or other pressure from bad actors seeking to attack their airports. Other workers might have connections to non-state terror groups or cells. Some airport insiders no doubt have suffered from (or are still suffering) mental health problems that could lead them to act out in potentially deadly ways.

I had no idea there were that many people running around airports with access badges. But I also had no idea that TSA checked their names every day to see if they were on that government terrorist watch list. And I had never heard of "Rap Back," which would let an airport know if someone with an access badge had gotten themselves arrested or hauled in by the cops. From what I read, a lot of airports don't participate in that Rap Back thing because they think it will cost too much. Ummm... ;-)

A bigger concern that these jay-birds is the number of obviously Muslim TSA screeners at airports like Detroit and Philadelphia whom I have encountered. Detroit even has a Muslim prayer room located behind security check-in with an arrow pointing toward Mecca. Of course, they call it a “religious reflections room” and it is open to the public. But spend a little more than an hour there and you discover the truth.

Is anyone checkin to see if the TSA itself should be on the no fly list?

Just about the entire Hussein admin should be deported at the least!

It should concern everyone that all a mechanic has to do is loosen a single connection or wire just enough that it will pass the initial check on the tarmac but could come loose at altitude. In one accidental incident a single piece of tape over a pitot tube caused a plane to crash.

Haven’t flown through EWK since 9-11, but I would not be surprised if the list was a WHOLE LOT LONGER.

Yes, and they can do whatever they want. No m*zz should be working at an airport.

Aviation Security is an illusion. Period, all stop. Any vendor can get anything through service deliveries. Tons of material comes into the airports without real screening. Cargo, trucks, or people...all it takes is one insider. ONE.

Yeah, I kinda have to agree. Looks like a lot security theater to me. And from what I’ve seen, the only reason some planes haven’t been blown out of the sky is because the bomb-makers (or assemblers, in the case of the Underwear Bomber and the Shoe Bomber guys) were incompetent. Ugh.

Muzzies are everywhere at the Minneapolis airport. Scared the shiite out of me.

Yes, they’re a threat.
Where do you think those boxcutters came from on 09/11? The hijackers didn’t carry them on. They were pre-positioned.

That's a really good point. I wonder if airport screening machines have an imaging log such that they could have gone back and looked at the images from when the terrorists went through. I've seen photos of them in security, but it would be very interesting to see what was on the screen when they were walking through. Or, maybe those machines were just metal detectors back then.

Same with Seattle, WA and Minneapolis, MN airports. Both seem to have over 50% Somali employees.

It seems that any government employee poses a threat to air travelers. ;-D

More proof of my theory on the TSA: It is security theatre, it was never about security for traveling public. It is a jobs program for certain favored classes.

You probably won't realize this in an airport like Pittsburgh since the people working at TSA look and act like locals because they are mostly locals. At least for now.

Yep, I fly out of Detroit. It’s just great to see multiple middle eastern men with the fully trimmed Muslim beard handling your luggage. Then there’s the Muslim women in TSA.

What could possibly go wrong?

All in the name of “inclusion” and multi-culturalism. It’s just a matter of time...
