I can understand complaining about that. That really was the school's fault because the transcript must be sent directly from the school. Your husband's school dropped the ball. (Glad everything worked out for him in the long run, though.)
In the case of this valedictorian, her school didn't make that kind of mistake. She's complaining about not receiving scholarship information until the day before the deadline(s) and then "potentially" missing out. That is, she must not have missed out on the scholarship(s). She's just annoyed that she didn't receive the info sooner.
She could've looked up info on Fast Web, or just looked at the college websites for scholarship info. That's what homeschooled students do. Having trouble feeling sorry for her... lol.
I noticed that, too. :-)
NO !!!
Nothing would have been done.
She did the right thing by speaking up in front of Eveyone.
bmfl
Ya think???
I do.
I'm appalled at the stuff that's covered up by school officials.
What she did was the only venue where her words would have had any impact.
Your dream world of what *should be* and *should have been done* and how it would work out, has NO basis in reality.
You can rag on what you think is the *right* way to deal with the situation all day, and the end result in this world is that by doing it your way, NOTHING would be accomplished and nothing would change.
But if she did not witness the stuff happening to others, she cannot legitimately speak on their behalf.
She can only accurately and honestly relate what she experienced.
If others experienced the same, they need to speak for themselves.
BS!
It's their JOB to inform her of those scholarship. They are getting paid to help these kids with the college admissions process and direct them to potential scholarships.
If she's expected to fend for herself, then get rid of the guidance counselors.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Once right and wrong are transgressed, the integrity of the arrangement is compromised and all bets are off... or they should be.
Good point! This is where the herds of happy book-burning snowflakes on today’s college campuses come from.
She expects energy and competence from govt workers? And shes valedictorian??
My third grade teacher hated me the most in my class. I too hope she rots in hell for what she did to me.
good for her. nothing wrong with being direct!!!!
I do not recall ever receiving any form of guidance from a counselor. As far as I can tell, the prime reason for having school counselors appears to be making psychology majors believe they have some hope of getting a job.
Yes, that's one of the functions of the counselors. Assess the student's abilities and goals then steer them towards the schools most suited for them.
The same thing applies to athletic coaches who try to find scholarships thru their connections in the college coaching industry. They may have an outstanding athlete who may not be Div. 1 caliber but could be a stand out in Div. II. They'll contact the coaches and say hey, I've got this kid why don't you come out and check him out.
They even go so far as to provide college coaches videos highlighting their kid's abilities. I once attended a volleyball camp and the instructor held a class for the parents and coaches teaching them how to actually market their kids and get them scholarships into universities.....
How true then and now. It seems most high school counselors spent time getting the children of socially prominent families into the best colleges.
I remember in 1966, my counselor looking at my PSAT scores and telling me I would have trouble getting C’s in college.
She was right-I did have trouble getting C’s. I didn’t get any! (In fairness she recommended I take a chemistry class which I did with a great teacher-who changed my life).
How do you know she wasn’t already ignored and decided that venue was the best bet for getting some Truth out there?
