Valedictorian blasts school's staff in commencement speech, claims they failed to help her

A California valedictorian used her high school commencement speech last week to accuse office staff of nearly making her lose out on scholarship money, a counselor of never having time for her and another teacher of being consistently drunk in class. The address has since gone viral.

Nataly Buhr, a senior at San Ysidro High School in San Diego, began her address by thanking her parents, friends and a few select teachers for inspiring her to achieve success. She then continued to “thank” other school employees whom she said taught her valuable lessons by failing to do their own jobs

Without mentioning the names of school employees, Buhr launched her attack by beginning with the school’s main office staff.

“Your negligence to inform me of several scholarships until the day before they were due potentially caused me to miss out on thousands of dollars,” she said.

I’d hire her. She should be applauded for calling them out.

If her story about the intoxicated teacher is true, there needs to be serious investigation.

How so. A piss poor guidance counselor can certainly mean students lose out on valuable opportunities.

True.

Good for her! None of these issues or problems would be given a second glance.

In my day, (’85 grad) counselors were seen as little more than a joke. We certainly didn’t expect “support” from them.

Someone as qualified as that shouldn’t need help, and certainly shouldn’t need to go out of her way to make others look bad in that kind of speech. Sorry, I disagree, and think that was not the time nor the place for that kind of speech. Respectfully, CAZD

But a valedictorian speech is not the time and place for vicious attacks, true or not.

She should have gone to the school principal privately and bring up the problems. I cannot believe that they would have been ignored.

She ruffled more feathers than Jeanie C. Riley at the Harper Valley PTA!

For the sake of future students, it’s good that she rocked everybody’s boat. For her own sake, she may regret not being more diplomatic. Some of those ‘lousy teachers’ will try to get even with poor recommendations. It may not matter to a gal this poised, confident and articulate. She was not brought up to be fearful of authority. That’s often a plus in the longrun.

We had one in fifth grade who terrorized the students, screamed in their faces, ridiculed them when they could not complete a program on the chalk board.

She’d place students under her desk and kick them if they moved. She would pull students out of their chairs by their hair.

The teaching assistant who had been assigned to her was terrified of her and not once stopped the abuse. The principal and other teaches did nothing. She was an old hag who had been a teacher in the Holbrook, Massachusetts school system for a long time.

Over forty years later I can still smell the cigarette smoke and blackberry brandy on her as she screamed in my face.

I hope she rots in hell. I hope the damned teaching assistant does too.

I can’t imagine a Dem politician finding anything wrong with the educational establishment.

I had a vindictive and abusive guidance counselor in junior high school. Some of these people are just dreadful and have no business working with kids.

The teacher you are describing should have been fired and never gotten another job.

Is her mother’s maiden name Rodham?

in my day....last 60’s early 70’s..it seemed the only kids the counselors had time for were the ones with rich parents or otherwise already getting lots of scholarship money.....you know, the important people

I think it’s great that she called out the useless deadwood employees that saturate the public schools. Students have enough to cope with, without lazy staff who are just there to get a paycheck and provide no value in exchange.
