How so. A piss poor guidance counselor can certainly mean students lose out on valuable opportunities.

In my day, (’85 grad) counselors were seen as little more than a joke. We certainly didn’t expect “support” from them.

I had a vindictive and abusive guidance counselor in junior high school. Some of these people are just dreadful and have no business working with kids.

Understatement of the last century: I missed out on the Air Force Academy for that very reason.

I went to a prep school, and the guidance counselor was worthless. He suggested Antioch to me, and came up with no scholarship opportunities, even though he should have known that my family was not well off.

Because I was a bit of a rabble rouser, he assumed I would fir in at a lefty place like Antioch. Even though I had been a loud hard right activist for my seven years there. He was also a bit shocked at my PSAT/SAT scores, as my grades were erratic. The school only had 320 students with a graduating class of 60, so it wouldn't have been too much for him to keep up.

I literally received zero help from my high school counselor. They only helped the kids who were in trouble all the time.

There are guidance counselors who write off students who are not supposed to succeed. I had one of those.
I’m supposed to be sorry I didn’t live down to his expectations.
