Dominican Republic deaths have Americans rethinking their vacations: "We don't want to be next"
CBS News ^ | June 11, 2019 | Staff

After at least six U.S. tourists died under mysterious circumstances there in the last 12 months, Americans with plans to visit the Dominican Republic are reconsidering their vacations. The deaths include a California man, Robert Wallace, whose family told Fox News he became critically ill in April at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino resort in Punta Cana. They decided to come forward after learning of others recently who died in similar circumstances while vacationing on the island.

Wallace's family says he was in the Dominican Republic for his stepson's wedding. He quickly became sick and died after drinking a scotch from the minibar at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Nearly two months later, his family still doesn't have answers.

A lot of alternatives in the Caribbean than risking poisoning in the Dominican Republic. Although prices might plummet.

I've never understood how people could vacation in Third World ****holes. The weather and scenery may be wonderful and the resort itself attractive - but it's surrounded by and staffed with ****hole-dwellers.

One goes to one of these places and just stays on the resort enjoying the sun and beach. If one wants to go off resort, then go to Bermuda.

Been thinking...

Could be sabotage on behalf of “other’ destination islands and resorts.

Just saying...

I think it is just incompetence, and total disregard for safety. This is a 3rd world country.

That’s very Machiavellian thinking.

I like it.

Which still isn't enough: "He quickly became sick and died after drinking a scotch from the minibar at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino."

Go to Barbadoes.
The Island is beautiful, the people are wonderful, the food is great. It has the best rum in the world.
And they all speak English.

The deaths have been happening for a long time. The media never told the people about them. If the media had done their job, Americans would have rethought their vacations a long time ago.

Me neither. Like that young couple who were lured by a soldier to step across a line into Iran while on a bicycle and hiking trip. Then put into hellish jails for many months accused of being spies. Fools.

Old leftist Marxist Phil Ochs song: (Difference now is there are no US Marines landing there. All bad guys now.)

Ready for the tricks, their bayonets are fixed
Now they are rolling
And the tanks make tracks past the trembling shacks
Where fear is unfolding
All the young wives afraid, turn their backs on the parade
With babes they’re holding
The marines have landed on the shores
Of Santo Domingo
A bullet cracks the sound, the army hit the ground
The sniper is callin’
So they open their guns, a thousand to one
No sense in stalling
He clutches at his head and totters on the edge
Look how he’s falling
The marines have landed on the shores
Of Santo Domingo

The media has been focused on cruise ship incidents and is just now reporting incidents in resorts.

I wonder if these resorts ever have a norovirus outbreak? - Tom

No, I think it is someone who buys liquor for these mostly all inclusive resorts was looking to save money. Instead of buying their liquor from the distributor in Miami, we will buy from the distributor in X. Therefore, it is good for the bottom line. They are supplying bootleg liquor probably with fake labels to look like famous brands.

Back in the 1980s there was a bar in Buffalo that catered to the UB and Buff State crowd. On Weds night they started a $2 cover charge and all mixed drinks were free for the first 2 hours(8-10pm). They went up $1/hour after 10pm until they were back at regular price. They used generic liquor. The bottles were white labels that stated: VODKA, GIN, RUM, WHISKEY, TEQUILA.

It was the worst cheap liquor you could buy. It gave you a terrible hang over. It also became the busiest and most profitable night of the week for the bar. The place was packed with college students. This was when drinking age in NY/Erie County/Buffalo was 18 and the bars stay open until 4 am.

It became so popular that a bar/restaurant that my buddy managed out in the suburbs did the same thing on Tuesday nights. They were closed on Mondays and Tuesday was the slowest night of the week. They did the same exact thing with Vodka drinks. $2 cover to get in. Free vodka drinks for the first two hours. Prices went up $1/hour until midnight. Then back to regular prices.

We bought Popov Vodka in 1.75 liter bottles. It was the cheapest brand name vodka you could buy back then. Once word got out it became our busiest night of the week. I checked IDs at the door. There was a line out the door at 8pm to get in. The bar was so packed that in that first two hours there was no way you could get more than 5 or 6 drinks. We kept track of how many vodka drinks we poured. There were two bar tenders, a bouncer and me for employees =,plus the owner. People could not believe we could do this. We had to be loosing money. We calculated that the liquor including the plastic cup and the mixer COST $.06/10 oz drink including spillage. So, even during the first two hours we were actually making a small profit. It became our busiest and most profitable night.

It is a third world country, but, not within the resorts. The resorts are a different world within the DR. Naturally, the people serving the resorts might not be as hygienically aware or careful as in other resorts or in the U.S.A.

My whole family went to Punta Cana for a wedding, but thankfully, before the deaths started occurring.

I've been to many Islands in the Caribbean and I disagree. I have lived in Aruba, Antigua & Barbuda, and the Conch Republic. They all have relatively low crime and poverty rates, wonderful people, and excellent food and resources. I've also visited Puerto Rico many times, and while most of the the politicians may be liberal flakes, the Island, people, food, and culture are a national treasure. And while the Dominican Republic may be a turd world country, it shares the Island with Haiti, which is a fifth world sh!thouse.

Ever notice how advanced civilizations with tall buildings, industrial production, and modern sanitation, are usually found in cold climates (Israel is the exception)?

I live in one and prefer to stay right where I am, where the water’s always safe to drink.

Like most of Europe….

Yes.

The fools are throwing away centuries of culture and tradition in order to allow waves of Muslims to take over. But unlike after the Crusades, when the Judeo Christian world allowed Muslims to survive, when the Muslims win this time they will take sledgehammers to all the priceless works of art and architecture and explosives and fire accelerators to burn down the Notre Dame and Chartres cathedrals.

And like WWII (”First they burned the books, then they burned the people”) there will be no tolerance and no diversity-—only Islam and piles of dead infidels.

Our Dominican housekeeper has a very bad habit of putting cleaning solutions (Clorox, etc.) in random bottles around the house for easy reach. I mean, she would take a water bottle, fill it with Clorox, and put one each under a bathroom sink, for example, so she doesn’t have to lug the whole Clorox bottle upstairs.

It doesn’t matter how many times we tell her not to do this, she keeps on doing it. Thankfully we know better. but I wouldn’t put it beyond the resorts housekeepers to do the same, even storing the stuff in the mini-fridge, or consuming the liquor and sodas, and replacing that with similar looking liquids.
