Guatemalan potbelly sculptures suggest people knew about magnetism more than 2,000 years ago
HEADS UP Colossal stone heads from an ancient Guatemalan site contain magnetic fields on the right temple and cheek, spots that apparently held special significance for makers of the
New research provides the first detailed look at how these sculpted body parts were intentionally placed within magnetic fields on large rocks.
The researchers studied 11 potbelly sculptures, six heads and five bodies, now displayed in a Guatemalan town. At least 127 such sculptures have been found at sites in Mesoamerica, an ancient cultural region that runs from central Mexico through much of Central Americ

Might be the time to bring up the magnet repels apple experiments!! TRUE!
THIS TREAD PRESENTED TO YOU BY SunkenCiv.
Just finished mowing and the rain started.
Time for some big giant heads and magnets!
I was hoping for some fun with fulgurites, but I guess not today? (-rocks-struck-lightning)

I'm glad the Guatemalans figured this stuff out. It's nice that Stone Age people knew this stuff.
But we've known for a long time that the Ancient Greeks (ex. philosopher Thales) were studying magnetism more than 2000 years ago. We didn't need potbelly scultures from Guatemala to tell us that people knew about magnetism more than 2,000 years ago.
But we’ve known for a long time that the Ancient Greeks (ex. philosopher Thales) were studying magnetism more than 2000 years ago.
But just think if they had some big giant semi-magnetic heads; how cool would that be!
And the old Greeks were some kind of white, the Mesoamericans more like brown, therefore...
They simply have to accentuate any and all nonwhite achievement; unless they happen to be Asian.
So many rules/changes, difficult to keep up with the game.
Thanks DUMBGRUNT for taking care of this one. Have fun later with fulgurites.
IOW, 120 did not have magnetized points.
All of a sudden I’m not on the ping list-could you please put me back? Thank you
Will do.
IOW, 120 did not have magnetized points.
Maybe they were in the sun, curie point and all that?
Perhaps to close to a hot volcano?
Would you believe, the magnets are worn out from old age?
How could any researcher possibly write about random magnetic points on a large rock?
Say it ain’t so, Joe.
One thing I do know, people were a lot smarter a long time ago than what we give them credit for. Sure, didn’t have the technology, or tools we have. But that has nothing to do with intelligence.
No; reading carefully, all 11 of the 11 studied displayed the described properties.
The rest are known to exist, but were not studied, so nothing can be said either way about them.
