SU-152 was a legendary Soviet howitzer canon. It was called a Heavy Tank Destroyer because of severe damage it caused to German Panther and Tiger tanks. Lets see why Nazi tank drivers were so afraid of it:
Those are examples of the German tanks being hit by SU-152.
There was very small chance for survival for the crews.
Panther tank front armor completely crashed by SU-152.

I see several Panthers, a couple of Sturmgeschutz Mk III’s, and even a Brummbär, but no Tigers.

152 mm, about 6 inches. Not much finesse, just shear brute power. Fairly typical of Soviet military thinking.

At what muzzle velocity I wonder?

I always liked this tank destroyer. However, I always thought of it as an armored artillery piece on a tracked chassis. I really had no idea that it was so devastating against German vehicles.

Pretty low. This is a big HE hit, not AP.

An HE hit would be enough. The problem was being able to hit the tank.

the ML-20 gun muzzle velocity 1968-2230 ft./sec. depending on projectile fired.
To: AppyPappy
Exactly. It’s a close range tool. Not many hits from 1000 yards out, which was possible with the German 88s.

At what muzzle velocity I wonder? Most HE rounds were 655 meters/second. The SU-152 relied heavily upon blast kills vice penetration/over-penetration.

If a tank was charging straight at or away from you, you had a chance. But a mobile 152 was a deal changer, whether the target is a tank, building or pill box.
