A Star is Reborn: How Gwen Verdon made Bob Fosse the Biggest Director in the World only to [Trunc]

Much is known about the life of Bob Fosse, the legendary choreographer who won an Oscar for his direction of Cabaret.

The same cannot be said for Gwen Verdon, his just-as-talented wife and lifelong professional partner.

That should be remedied in some ways with the release of the new FX series Fosse/Verdon, which takes a look at the paths of the two artists and makes it clear just how much the two needed one another, and just how little Fosse gave back at times.

In the series Fosse is played by Oscar-winner Sam Rockwell, while Verdon is played by four-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams.

But despite Fosse getting top billing, this is Verdon's show thanks in large part to another remarkable performance from Williams.

While he did a great job with Caberet, I don’t think Fosse was ever the “Biggest director in the world”.

I remember a later role for Gwen was the owner of the beauty parlour that Kim Basinger worked at in “Nadine”, lol.

Gwen was great in Damn Yankees, and she was super in Cocoon.

Loved her.

A friend of mine is writing Verdon’s biography. Huge!

The strange thing is that when you see them perform together in a movie, Fosse is brilliant to Verdon’s excellent. Spry little guy.

She had an affair with Danny Kaye and she is in at least one of his movies as a dancer. Great talent.

I remember the 1979 “All That Jazz” movie with Roy Schieder playing Fosse, if that was anywhere close to accurate that dude led a hard life.

Anyone ever see an incongruous “jazz hands” joke made?

Thank Bob Fosse.

Verdon was at her best playing the seductive Lola to an unwilling Tab Hunter in "Damn Yankees.

“Biggest director in the world”. Perhaps this should be given to Orson Welles.

Micheal Jackson owes a huge debt to Bob Fosse and his 1974 performance in “The little prince”:
