England's Cambridge University has withdrawn a visiting fellowship offer from controversial Toronto University professor Jordan Peterson.
Peterson requested a two-month fellowship at the university's Faculty of Divinity in October, but the school opted to rescind the opportunity following a review of his work, a spokesperson for Cambridge University said in a press release.
In a blog post, Peterson said Cambridge did not directly notify him that the fellowship offer had been rescinded.
The school's decision was "a serious error of judgment" and the Faculty of Divinity "continued [to] decline in relevance that they deserve," he said.
Peterson rose to prominence after publishing his best-selling book 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos. Despite his popularity, many have criticized his opinions on feminism, political correctness culture, and gender non-conforming people.
On Thursday, New Zealand book store chain Whitcoulls stopped selling Peterson's work following the Christchurch terror attack, which left 50 dead inside two mosques. The decision was made "in light of some extremely disturbing material being circulated prior, during and after the Christchurch attacks," Whitcoulls said.
You’d think the bigots at Cambridge would WANT the Father of “Compelled Speech”.
Jordan Peterson is somehow culpable in the New Zealand shootings? The madness only gets worse. I saw Peterson give a lecture in Seattle (of all places) last year, and he is the opposite of a firebrand - mild-mannered and sometimes painfully tentative, and his method is “Socratic,” i.e., searching for answers rather than proclaiming absolute truths, trying to perfect and clarify his ideas even as he speaks.
To the left, which says it is all about science, facts are “disturbing.”
No surprise here. Communists loathe dissenting views. Let us never forget that Cambridge shaped the mush that were the young minds of Maclean, Burgess, Philby, Blunt and Cairncross, into communist spies against the West in general, and against the US and UK in particular. Peterson is anathema to the commies of Cambridge!
My husband took two of our kids to his lecture Last year. They loved it. Our daughter immediately ordered a copy of “12 Rules For Life”. I read the first chapter this week, one of the most fascinating things I have read. I wish I had read something like it 25 years ago.
Right on! Cambridge was and is still a hot bed of vile communism, Soviet-Cuba style.
Too logical and effective for liberal insertions. They see him as “dangerous.”
institutions
The rules are sort of sappy:
Rule 1: Stand up straight with your shoulders back
Rule 2: Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping
Rule 3: Make friends with people who want the best for you
Rule 4: Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today
Rule 5: Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them
Rule 6: Set your house in perfect order before you criticize the world
Rule 7: Pursue what is meaningful (not what is expedient)
Rule 8: Tell the truth or, at least, dont lie
Rule 9: Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you dont
Rule 10: Be precise in your speech
Rule 11: Do not bother children when they are skateboarding
Rule 12: Pet a cat when you encounter one on the street
The Divinity School, or whoever is responsible for this, should get the heave-ho.
Peterson is a clear-thinking person and a Commonwealth dude. They should embrace him and his ideas in this nihilistic, postmodern, deconstructed culture we live in.
Not sappy. Sublime. IMHO.
If that’s as far as you get, just reading the “rules” without delving deeper then yes, they appear sappy. I suggest you spend some time reading viewing some of his university lectures, particularly the Maps of Meaning. He is by no means the savior of western philosophy, but he’s a critical thinker with some really profound ideas. Some of his debates are worth watching too. The Munk debate regarding Political Correctness, with Stephen Frye on his team no less, is quite good.
I seriously doubt that. There is nothing in his work that would warrant such an action.
More likely, they were pressured by politically correct liberals on their faculty to rescind the invitation.
Buncha wimps. Sad for the students who will not be given the opportunity to learn from one of the finest professors around.
This is long. It is very worthwhile. During the talk, anti-Free Speech SJWs try to shut down the event. JBP addresses them and their ilk very effectively.

Worthwhile.
If you want a smaller dose of JBP to get started, here he oh-so-nicely eviscerates British talk show host Cathy Newman.

Aka cultural Marxism, on that last.
Yes, that’s as far as I got.
The idea that JBP and/or his book was in any way responsible for the Christchurch Facebook killers actions is complete rubbish, and grown people at Whitcoulls should be ashamed of what theyve done here. To put things in perspective, they wont sell an innocuous philosophy/ self-help book, yet they still sell Mein Kampf!
Fascists silencing people for their thoughts.
60 years ago some of the greatest theologians in Christianity were ensconced at Cambridge in the Divinity School. Today those same chairs are inhabited with scurrilous and obscene trolls. Nothing is left of the Christian foundation of this venerable seminary. Peterson would find better dialogue at one of the US or African seminaries that still teach Biblical Christianity.
