Washington (CNN)Former FBI Director James Comey called Thursday for the removal of Confederate statues in Virginia's capital in the wake of blackface scandals involving top statewide elected officials, in an op-ed for The Washington Post.
"Expressing bipartisan horror at blackface photos is essential, but removing the statues would show all of America that Virginia really has changed," Comey writes. "There is no doubt that Virginia's leaders need to be held accountable for their personal history, but every Virginia leader is responsible for the racist symbols that still loom over our lives," Comey writes.

The FBI has around 35,000 employees and a budget of around 9 billion they deign to let us know about. No doubt there has been a complete culture change since he left, for sure.

Longstreet was a Georgian, not a Virginian. Monument Avenue honors Virginia's senior confederate commanders. Jefferson Davis is the only non-Virginian, but as president, he of course lived in Richmond during the war. Not that Comey would bother to base his tantrum on facts.
Yes, Longstreet became a controversial figure after the war, for reasons that reflect great credit upon him. But that shouldn't be conflated with Monument Avenue politics.
