A controversial new law in California, the first of its kind in the U.S., requires publicly traded companies headquartered in the state to include at least one woman on their board of directors by the end of 2019.
But are quotas are the best way to bring womens voices to the table?
Legislators in New Jersey have already indicated they think so. Garden State lawmaker Nancy Pinkin (D-NJ) proposed a bill that would require women on state-based corporate boards. The measure has been sent to its first committee for hearing. Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania have also moved the needle by adopting non-binding resolutions that encourage board diversity.
By 2021, Californias law requires boards of six or more to include at least three female members; boards with five members must include at least two female directors; and boards with four or fewer members must include at least one. Fines of $100,000 can be imposed against companies for an initial failure to comply, and as much as $300,000 for subsequent violations.
That means companies like Googles parent Alphabet Inc. (GOOG) (GOOGL), as well as Facebook (FB) and Apple (AAPL), will need to boost female-occupied board seats from their current numbers each has two female directors to at least three over the next three years.

Good points. This nonsense is unworkable when you get into all the transsexual types and various gender identities.
Not fair to the other 56 genders.
“Headquartered” or “incorporated?”
Because, companies will incorporate in Delaware to avoid this crap.
Gender Dysphoria ping. I've tried to get in touch with my feminine side, but wound up getting hit with a sexual harassment lawsuit.
” We don’ need no stinkin’ Constution. “
What happens when the male board members leave in fear of a sexual harassment lawsuit l.
Ball of twine unwinding with these cats.
Any board that doesn't have its head up its ass will immediately move the HQ out of California.
Ive tried to get in touch with my feminine side, but I only wound up sueing myself for sexual harassment.
I know this will sound counterproductive but maybe you should only go to work when youre not feeling yourself.
California violates the sacred Right of Assembly we all cherish.
The Right of Assembly did not list the other 56 genders. Beat the Regressives at their own ridiculous rules.
Why should any company "bring wonen's voices to the table"?. If all they have to bring is the fact of being women, they bring nothing. Board members should be chosen for expertise, not genitalia. Diversity is NOT our strength.
Get a few guys on the board to identify as lesbian or as transitioning to female.
This is the camel’s nose.
If they can mandate gender representation, they can mandate anything else. You will have X% ethnic minorities. You’ll have at least Y% sexual minorities. You will have union representatives or community stakeholders on the board, for the good of the people.
