Veteran actor Scott Wilson, best known to TV audiences as Hershel Greene on The Walking Dead, died Saturday. He was 76.

TMZ reports that Wilson died due to complications from leukemia.

News of Wilson’s passing comes just hours after it was announced that he will appear in Walking Dead‘s upcoming ninth season, reprising his role as Hershel. It’s believed that his episode was shot earlier this summer. Wilson joined AMC’s zombie smash in Season 2 and was written out in the middle of Season 4.

Additional TV credits include recurring roles on The OA, Damien, Bosch and CSI.

Walking Dead‘s official Twitter feed confirmed the actor’s passing late Saturday: “We are deeply saddened to report that Scott Wilson, the incredible actor who played Hershel… has passed away at the age of 76. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Rest in paradise, Scott. We love you!”

bet you play video games and watch super hero movies too.

Yes, I do. Because I don't sit in a candle-lit room reading books from the 1800s and bitch about Hollywood like some FReepers do.

It is a good sign of mental acuity to maintain a basic knowledge of the social environment.

Or don’t they get AMC in the halfway house?

RIP. One of America’s best film actors, who never received the acclaim he deserved. I remember his moving performance as George Wilson in The Great Gatsby.

I became a huge fan & through the years marveled at the complete characterizations he brought to the screen. Walking Dead fans got a taste of his talent, once again creating a full, rich character as Hershel Green.

If you think that was some performance, check out his work in the movie “In Cold Blood” or “The Ninth Configuration”. Anything he was ever in, he was incredible.

Edna, so nice to hear this. He really was an actor’s actor. While others of his generation, like DeNiro demanded the spotlight, I’m not surprised that Scott Wilson was more focused on acting than stardom

Very sad. I loved Hershel, and was heartbroken when he died on the show. Even sadder now that his actor is gone, by all reports he was a wonderful man. Rest in piece, sir

Yes he was a great character in Walking Dead. A Country Vet with a couple Daughters including Maggie whom I assume is still on the show? Stop watching a couple seasons ago when Lucille started picking off main characters like Glenn and Abraham.

People keep dying like this and soon there will be no more music or movies being made. This is ridiculous. All these people dying. When will the madness stop?

Thank you, Edna. I’m comforted that I learned this from you, here on FR, rather than two weeks later on some lame website. I will send a note to his wife, Heavenly. She is a South Korean immigrant whom he loved, dearly. Scott was a down to earth person who you could be proud of. Scott would have absolutely appreciated your post here!
