Broadcast journalism major here - only worked in it during college as I was going in the Army at graduation. I did my required time as an officer and returned to civilian life to work for my in-laws in a small manufacturing company for 17 years. Now I consult with manufacturing companies to help them improve operations.

Writing skills have been important in every job I’ve ever had and even more so now. I’m in the middle of a masters degree program online and it’s apparent that the younger students don’t understand the writing of the simple thesis statement, let alone a paper to APA-style standards. Yet I found the same thing as a college freshman in 1973 when Composition I was filled with students who were dumbstruck by the concept of structured expository writing with thesis statements and using rhetoric to develop the theme. The world of education has slipped mightily away from the classic liberal arts education. All the technology in the world is not going to put Humpty Dumpty back together.

English undergrad programs are reeducation camps.

They can get the same jobs - asking “paper or plastic” or “would you like fries with that” - with or without the English degree. Why waste the money on tuition?

Paying a fortune to a college for something you can get by just reading is nonsense.

Actually this is more true today then ever. The internet has opened up learning more than even the printing press did. It is possible to find information on almost any subject you are interested in.

I have watched many college level lectures on subjects I am interested in. May not earn a degree but I am gaining an education.

Yesterday's "Peanuts" rerun in the newspaper had Snoopy, as Joe Cool, trying to decide which college courses to sign up for. He thinks to himself, "I'm hung up on languages, so maybe I will take Hebrew, Korean, and Serbian." Then Linus walks by and says, "Joe, I see you're down for Bonehead English again."

I suspect Snoopy did not go on to major in English.

The marketable skill is writing ability.

Too much Lib alterations coming into the language from the MLA and similar.

Too few high school and college standards for English language anymore.

Why should they?

It used to be that the English department taught you how to communicate effectively.

Now they leave that to the physiology department.

Because English majors no longer study the great novelists, playwrights and poets in English and American literature but spend most off their time taking squalid detours through every crackpot leftist identity political cause they come to — and they never get back on course.

In short, moonbat leftists took over the English departments of nearly every university in America. You get nothing of value with this degree. And you learn nothing of value. It is not a way to obtain a “liberal” education anymore, as it once was. It is the opposite — indoctrination in useless leftist ideology.

Before even reading the article, I said “politicization of the English departments’ curriculum” was a major cause of the decline English major students.

All you had to do was be in touch with what has been going on in every area of academia, for decades, and you’d know Marxist dialectics and cultural Marxism had leaped from Poli-Sci and Sociology to EVERY area of academia.

I was an English major over 25 years ago.

That would after the radicals in The Modern Language association had already taken firm and total control of the agenda.

Game over.

I thought I wanted to go to law school so I majored in English to maximize my GPA. I got my law degree, but now I would love to go into something else. The English degree is very limiting. I would never recommend it. My kids go to a private school with an intensive writing curriculum so they can learn to be good writers before college and then major in something more useful.

The English students went into journalism, like Carl Bernstein.

I guess reading lesbian medieval poetry is not popular with students.

So true. Universities are attacking, discounting and denouncing white people and their works, particularly of white males, with ferocity. The University of Pennsylvania, founded by Ben Franklin before the United States was founded, recently removed the portrait of Shakespeare that had hung in the English department for a century, and replaced it with — you were close — a black lesbian contemporary poet no more than a dozen people have ever heard of. It's criminal.

What most POCs don't understand is that English is not the ancestral language of most of the white people in this country, whose ancestors spoke Dutch, Irish, Scots Gaelic, Welsh Gaelic, German, Swedish, French, Spanish, Norwegian, Polish, Danish, Lithuanian, Italian, Hebrew, Ukranian, Russian, Serbian, and more. All of our non-English ancestors from Europe, and there were many, had to learn English when they got here in order to become American.
