Hardly anyone majors in English anymore. Scholars debate why.

Amendment needs to be made for America holding English as the country’s official language but Congress is worthless and the left wants a 1000 languages and sh*tholes.

“My daughter has an associates in English. She works for a publisher and hopes to become a proofreader or editor.”

Good for her! The number of books published each year has skyrocketed to almost 400,000. Many of these are by self-published authors who hire editors before publishing their books. Myself included.

English majors have it all over gender studies majors when it comes to employment. They get to work the fryer rather than having to flip the hamburgers like the gender studies rocket scientists.

Your daughter has made a good career choice.

Proofreaders are desperately needed by most of the newspapers in this country. Although I don’t read newspapers as much anymore because I don’t have a dog or a bird anymore, I still like to get a newspaper once in a while. I find it painful to read some of the articles in newspapers. The spelling and grammar is terrible. And I was not an English major. Many times I have been tempted to take a red pen and just write in all the grammatical errors. I remember an article in particular a few years ago where it was actually difficult to follow what was written. It was obvious that the person had just written the article and never bothered to go back and actually read what they written. Very sad.

They tried several time to make English our national language but the snowflakes think it’d hurt immigrants self esteem or something something. I’ve been in several government offices and at the reception desk on a wall next to it is a list of about 25 languages that are accommodated.

I dunno.

$120,000 or so in debt for an English major.

or

Free library card and $5 worth of late fees.

Actual technical philosophy is still very difficult quasi-mathematical logic-chopping. It is still taught in some places.

[she] hopes to become a proofreader or editor.

Based on what I read these days, there isn't much demand for proofreaders or editors (/sarc). Best of luck to your daughter.

Our oldest daughter has always been a good writer; we used to spend hours together going over her compositions. She has good quantitative skills, too. She parlayed that into an excellent marketing role and does a lot of analysis AND report writing in her field. Some of her reports have wound up on governor's desks. Her biggest complaint these days? How bad the people she hires are at writing. She's always cleaning up their messes.

I hope she corrects the misuse of “bring, take, fetch” that prevails amongst noted authors today. Drives me nuts.

I have a degree in English and it was just a stepping stone to getting my law degree.

Honestly, it was a forgettable couse of study, though I specialized in eighteeth century english lit and Samuel Johnson. It was an interesting era and I enjoyed it but almost nobody else liked the period or the content (Johnson, Burke, Swift, etc.).

My mom was an English major.

My dad was an engineer. The worst fights I ever remember them having were over his spelling.

I came upon the following after one of their professors made the news for some leftist ‘activism.’

https://www.unl.edu/english/

Here we have a fine midwestern university with an English department. Note the ‘core values’ and read through the ‘Messages from the Department of English.’

What does this have to do with English?

Have you heard the idiot local “talking news heads”? They can’t even pronounce simple words like “street”. They pronounce it “Shhhh-treet”. Or words like, “Ex-shhh-treme”. I particularly like when they point you to look at the “pitcher” of the scene.

Friggin’ ignorant idiots.
