BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. (AP) -- A woman says her dog has died after warding off a bear that broke into her family's North Carolina home.
WRAL reported Saturday that the incident occurred in Black Mountain, a town outside Asheville in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Tiffany Merrill said she thought she was going to die when the bear broke in. She yelled to her children to shut their doors.
Her dog Pickles quickly appeared. Merrill said the five-pound dog "started barking and got the bear's attention and got the bear outside and he saved my life."
Merrill said she couldn't save her dog's life. She said she "wanted to go out there and jump on the back of the bear and save my dog."
She now finds herself grieving. She said Pickles "was always with me."

And I’ve seen bears on the island at Grayton Beach off 30A
We even have bear sightings in Williamson county TN near Franklin

That brings back memories. I used to compete in the highland games there. My Mother’s family, Clan McPhee, actually it should be Clan McDuffie as that is the original name, would always welcome me into their tent. I could hear them cheering as I ran by.

Dogs don’t know they are not people either.
They were full sized males. A bit larger than most doxxies. And worked well together.
If that isn’t true there is no heaven for anyone. I look forward to seeing my 7 dogs again 1 mutt and 6 German Shorthairs....all special to me in their own unique way!

The McDuffies came from the island of Colonsay in the Hebrides. It is considered part of the Highlands. The Clan history goes all the way back to the McAlpins.

I believe I read dachshunds were a breed developed to pull badgers out of there dens. Bobcats are no match for two buzz saws like that. IMO
Yeah, the Twilight Zone was great. Damn shame what has happened to television and so many other aspects of our once great culture.
I think their small size is the main reason their especially aggressive. Imagine seeing the world from their vantage point, several inches off the ground. Must be terrifying. They need to compensate for their small physical size somehow, if even as a bluff.
BLACK bears are USUALLY not aggressive except when they feel cornered or they have young near by.
Actually, i have been attacked by about a half a dozen dogs but no bears so far.
