A rare, brain-damaging virus that experts consider a possible epidemic threat has broken out in the state of Kerala, India, for the first time, infecting at least 18 people and killing 17 of them, according to the World Health Organization.
The Nipah virus naturally resides in fruit bats across South and Southeast Asia, and can spread to humans through contact with the animals bodily fluids. There is no vaccine and no cure.

Nipah virus (NiV) infection is a newly emerging zoonosis that causes severe disease in both animals and humans. The natural host of the virus are fruit bats of the Pteropodidae Family, Pteropus genus.
NiV was first identified during an outbreak of disease that took place in Kampung Sungai Nipah, Malaysia in 1998. On this occasion, pigs were the intermediate hosts. However, in subsequent NiV outbreaks, there were no intermediate hosts. In Bangladesh in 2004, humans became infected with NiV as a result of consuming date palm sap that had been contaminated by infected fruit bats. Human-to-human transmission has also been documented, including in a hospital setting in India.
NiV infection in humans has a range of clinical presentations, from asymptomatic infection to acute respiratory syndrome and fatal encephalitis. NiV is also capable of causing disease in pigs and other domestic animals. There is no vaccine for either humans or animals. The primary treatment for human cases is intensive supportive care.
I have heard rumors that it was a man made virus, genetically engineered from the animal form of the virus. I can’t verify, but it’s worth looking into.
Almost certainly linked to their water in which they mingle the filth of “sacred cows”.

High mortality.

Keep you comfortable till you die?
Sounds groovy.
You must remember we are talking about India.
Yes, india. With a population of 1.32 BILLION.
Four times that of the US. With flights out
every day.
Sometime one of these things is going to get loose
in a major population and there will be no stopping it.
My point being India is quite the hellhole. Not that it will stay in India.
Our PC locality has tons of people of every ethnicity and they are frequently traveling back and forth to these hellholes. I very much fear what goes on. Even our sons school is full of foreigners doing this same thing, never mind my college which loves illegals and Moslem travel.
Kerala is a popular destination for Christian missionaries from the U.S. Returning persons must be examined upon re-entry.
Just a touch of the flu officer....really.
Well, at least the Democrats are safe...
?India quite the Hell-Hole?! India moved its economy from socialist stupidity with governmental rules and fees all over everywhere to a capitalist nation with lots of wealth creation. There are in India lots of walled neighborhood communities with well to do intelligent families. The problem with India is the huge population of unskilled human beings. Just too many people and not enough employment. Yet the move to capitalism is working. Maybe 75 years from now, India will have expanded its middle class while reducing its lower class populations.
Re: Human-to-human transmission has also been documented
Oh, just great.
I live east of Seattle, in the heart of Microsoft country.
Half my neighbors, plus their frequently visiting families, are from India.
No sign yet of any diseased bats or farm animals, thank goodness.
