Trump's global disruption pushes Merkel closer to Putin's orbit
Chicago Tribune ^ | 2018 | Patrick Donahue and Ilya Arkhipov

As Donald Trump shakes up the global order, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is being pushed closer toward a more predictable partner in Moscow.

Now they're in the same corner trying to shield businesses from U.S. sanctions, defend the Iran nuclear accord ditched by Trump and rebuffing American objections to a new gas pipeline linking Russia and Germany.

Rapprochement with Russia is now a core policy objective in Berlin.

Even as the German leader seeks out Russia, Trump's spurning of global conventions on climate, trade and the Middle East is spooking her.

"Putin likes the irritation that Trump has created with Europe," said Josef Janning, head of the Berlin office of the European Council on Foreign Relations.

For Putin, it's an opportunity to chip away at his diplomatic isolation from Europe since Russia was dropped from the Group of Eight in 2014.

That includes Nord Stream 2, which Putin and Merkel have a joint interest in completing over U.S. objections. The Trump administration has threatened sanctions on companies working on the pipeline because more Russian gas would bypass Ukraine on its way to Germany.

Merkel, a Russophile and Russian speaker who grew up in communist East Germany, and Putin, a former KGB agent who served in the eastern German city of Dresden, are familiar with each other's background like perhaps no other major world leaders.

Frau Merkel can be always trusted to do the wrong thing.

“Frau Merkel can be always trusted to do the wrong thing.”

It the Germans want to get in bed with the Russians so be it. The Russians will own them in very short order. And, the Russians still haven’t forgotten The Great War in which 20M of their people were killed by the Germans.

What would a couple of 50 IQ Nazi ape propagandists from the Chicago Tribune know about international politics?

Merkel, a Russophile and Russian speaker who grew up in communist East Germany,

They had no choice.

Living in West Berlin I was able to watch a TV show called "We Speak Russian". It was like Leave It to Beaver but bent toward learning Russian. I thought it was 1950sish but still funny to watch.

Put in wants a dhimmi infested surrender culture that Germany has turned into? At least they won’t have to leave this time. Maybe Russia can fix their infestation problem.

“Merkel closer to Putin’s orbit”

When did she leave in order to get closer now? My understanding is that this old gal used to be a die hard east German commie marching to the tune of a Soviet band.

Many older people try to recreate what was best in their childhood. This old bag is no different.

It’s their corrupt energy policy. German pols have a big piece of Gasprom. They could be considering going nuclear generation sooner or later this will become a political issue once the Ruskys put the squeeze on that resource.

Frau Merkel is still a Commie.

She likely contributes to the CPUSA, who oddly enough supported H->! without an ounce of protest from Mrs. Clintoon.

Germany is desperately searching for new markets....they lost Saddam. Southern Europe’s economies were extended cheap credit via the Euro and then inevitably overheated. They thought they were going to be able to pocket more of the mullah’s blood money in Iran only to lose out on that. Now they’re desperately reaching out for China and Russia.

The problem is China is just as mercantile as they are if not even more and Russia has a relatively small economy that is hugely dependent on oil and gas production.

Germany never stopped collaborating with Putinist Russia. Siemens even supplied the turbines for Crimea.

Germany and Russia (Hitler and Stalin) had an ‘accommodation’ around the start of WW2.

It didn’t end well.
