Donald Trump says he has been too busy to buy a birthday present for his wife Melania, who turned 48 on Thursday.
In a TV interview he was asked what he had bought her and replied: "Well, I better not get into that 'cause I may get in trouble. Maybe I didn't get her so much."
However, he did manage to get the first lady a "beautiful card and some beautiful flowers" and added: "You know, I'm very busy to be running out looking for presents, OK?"
In a telephone interview on Fox & Friends, Mr Trump also praised his wife for her work on planning a state dinner in honour of visiting French President Emmanuel Macron, saying she had done a "fantastic job".
"The people of France were just spellbound by their great President who just left," Mr Trump said.
The state dinner attended by Mr Macron and his wife Brigitte was the first of the Trump administration.
First Lady Melania wore a custom Chanel gown of black Chantilly lace hand painted with silver and embroidered with crystal and sequins.
She was widely praised in the US press for her hands-on handling of details of the state dinner.
It is unlikely the President will be able to snatch time to buy a belated birthday gift this weekend as Angela Merkel travels to Washington to put pressure on Mr Trump to avert a trade war between the EU and US.
Downing Street has announced that Mr Trump will visit the UK on Friday 13 July, as first revealed by Sky News.
It will be his first visit to Britain since he was elected in 2016. He had been due to open the new US embassy in London in February but cancelled the trip.

No place for comments on the site, but I would have asked them where their article was when the Obamas stated in a People Magazine interview, that they don’t give their daughters birthday or Christmas gifts.

I don’t know what billionaires who have everything they could possibly want (mansions, yachts, planes, helicopters, the finest clothing, etc) could get as a birthday for their families other than something small and sentimental. Buying “stuff” for them is different than it is for us and has less meaning. Perhaps it’s fair to say that in such cases a personal note and a bouquet of flowers is more treasured than another pair of earrings.

Anybody who doesn’t understand that one of Trump’s personal assistants has been taking care of “little details” like this for him for YEARS is an idiot. People with a lot less money or in lesser positions of power all employ people to handle gift purchasing and special day remembering and all kinds of other little personal details. Heck, Melania probably has somebody that helps her with this, as well.

When you have everything you want or ever dreamed of, what more could she ask for. Looking at her background we can safely and truthfully say, “You’ve come a long way baby!”

What in the world could you buy for Melania? A lovely card with a hand-written love note and some beautiful flowers sounds like the perfect gift for the woman who literally has EVERYTHING.
