The Most Beautiful Place of Worship in Every State
Architecture Digest/ MSN ^ | January 25, 2018

From coast to coast, places of worship span nearly every architectural style, whether it’s a futuristic church in rural Indiana designed by one of Finland’s greatest architects (Eero Saarinen) or the recently restored Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Unity Temple in suburban Chicago. Mormon temples’ spires soar into the skyline and some Jewish temples are shapely in style, whether it’s a modern box or in perfect pitch with Feng Shui’s curvy chi. And no matter how many decades it’s been since their construction, a tiny steeple in the woods will never slip out of vogue.

Considering the fact that they chose something that resembles a barn silo as the most beautiful church in Massachusetts, consider yourself lucky you were left out.

I was glad to see so many Christian places of worship! I thought for sure A.D. would have a bunch of New Age, Indian and Islamic sites instead.

Michigan has many beautiful churches; wish they would’ve chosen one of them instead of the mosque in Dearborn

Yes, that one is particularly ugly. Overall, some nice ones and some not so nice. I like Kentucky's (slide 17).

They got AZ wrong. St Francis Xavier Del Bac is the most beautiful. A National Historic Landmark, San Xavier Mission was founded as a Catholic mission by Father Eusebio Kino in 1692. Construction of the current church began in 1783 and was completed in 1797. The oldest intact European structure in Arizona, the church's interior is filled with marvelous original statuary and mural paintings. It is a place where visitors can truly step back in time and enter an authentic 18th Century space.

Because original page has no photo?

St. Bernard de Clairvaux (North Miami Beach, Florida)

St. Bernard de Clairvaux is more widely known to tourists than parishioners (for Sunday-morning mass). During the 1920s, William Randolph Hearst bought the stone monastery cloister (dating back to 1133 AD in Spain) and shuttled it to New York City in parts. Not until the middle of last century, however, was it reinstalled in Florida.

I’m not surprised that the Indiana pick was from Columbus; but that city would also make the list of most ugly churches in America (First Christian Church).

One of the criteria for the list given seems to be cultural diversity. Some of the choices are quite ugly, even by modernist standards.

As for the Texas choice, the building is quite ugly on the outside - patterned after a concrete farm silo. First Presbyterian (liberal, PCUSA) a few blocks away is much more attractive, both inside and out.

Having been to several countries in the Middle East, I'll give credit where credit is due. The grand mosques are stunning works of architecture and it's that Sunni oil money that builds the ones in America as well.

They picked the concrete barf-o-rama of St. John's Abby over the Basilica of Saint Mary for Minnesota.

These people know nothing of beauty.

Kind of ironic that we can’t take it with us but we like to spend a lot to make “places of worship” breathtaking in their display of riches....

Yea, cause that’s what God cares about...

Sure, I think He cares about effort and a sense of importance in His places of worship.

Have you seen pictures of our State Buildings in Tallahassee? We seem to have a different ‘take’ on things here in Florida... might be why we’re not on the ‘better lists’...

“The new Capitol, though, turned out to be a monument to something else. There’s a 22-story executive branch tower bluntly thrusting itself toward the sky, bracketed by a pair of domes for the House and Senate. Drive toward it on Apalachee Parkway and it’s hard to miss the resemblance to ...

I understand a backboard as the centerpiece at a place of worship, but usually they're placed indoors above the court, not outdoors above the parking lot. Modernism, I guess.
