freerepublic | 2/9/2018 | greeenyes

he Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Normal February weather in Central Missouri. Sunny and pleasant yesterday, cold north wind and freezing rain today. lol

Went to the sawmill this morning and retrieved my trailer. It was dry when I got home, but by the time I’d finished unloading it was misting rain which is now freezing on everything. Unloading the wood didn’t trigger any back spasms so hopefully I’m past that for awhile.

I need to work on our tax return, so it can do what it’s going to do outside.

I hear you. Truth is, I am way too lazy to prune back too hard! I have only ever used neem. I just never remember to get it on the apple trees early enough. But now the deer have devoured the one apple, so it’s a new one in this spring. Different variety probably. And I do need to add blueberries to our yard.

I’m goint to go nuts this year planting Cannas. Mostly from seed. The Tropical and Cannova series from Takii seed seem to be good, and there’s fewer problems with Canna viruses from seed. But I did buy a few rhizomes at Wallymart, so we’ll see.

Interesting thing with Takii Canna seed is that they scarify the seeds for you, by burning two little holes in the hard seed coat with a laser. Looks like a snake bite. But at 40 or 50 cents per seed, they should engrave your name on them.

We got about a quarter inch of ice overnight. Not enough to cause tree damage, but it sure is slick out there this morning.

I got my YakTrax out of the closet. Haven’t needed them in two winters until today.

Thank-you....

An aside....I recently was basically given two Border Collies..been with me less than a week.

Well my Hay Bale garden sits on a concrete slab. And I've just let everything turn into mulch that was from last summer. Some of the bales really, really imploded..and these two BC's pretty much cleaned those up for me... Ha!! Looks like they had fun doing it too!!

When I went outside this afternoon, checked all the plants which are under a cover of leaves. There are a few new shoots emerging in the violet bed and one lone purple pansy. Indoors, sowed Snapdragon seeds from last year’s crop and also a new to me lettuce, Silvia. It is a red and white romaine from Burpee’s Organic seeds. They were sowed on February 5th and have already sprouted. So eager for them to mature. Temperatures today were in the 70’s but the weather report says we will be back to normal winter temperatures by tomorrow night. It has been raining also, something we don’t need too much of.

I have almost given up on Fruit Trees here. Planted in 2010, and still no fruit. We bought some more a year or so ago from a different company and plated in a different location, so keeping fingers crossed.

Have you tried swatting them with a rolled-up newspaper?

Seriously. It's an old orchardist trick. By battering the ends of the branches, you trigger the tree's "danger" mechanisms without actually endangering it. When a plant believes it's in danger, it speeds up its reproduction.

Some people go farther and actually hit the trunk with a baseball bat, but that carries the risk of actually damaging the tree.

I recommend Carol Deppe’s “Ruby-Gold Cascade” flint corn. Each ear is a solid color, but can be any one of a dozen different colors. Each color has a slightly different flavor, and it was bred to produce even in less-than-ideal conditions.

We’re setting up the seed starting system this week.
We’ll bake the starter soil and chick grit tomorrow.
This kills off the bugs that might live in the dirt.

Seeds to be planted Wednesday.
Right on schedule.
