How Bernie Sanders's minimum wage hike idea works in Venezuela
American Thinker ^ | 6 Jan, 2018 | Monica Showalter

Posted on 01/06/2018 8:31:21 AM PST by MtnClimber

Bernie Sanders has opined for years on the necessity of raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour, explaining that:

By phasing in a pay raise for tens of millions of workers, we can improve living standards, lift families out of poverty, and provide a much-needed boost to our economy. Our bill will raise the wages of 41 million workers — an extra $3,500 a year in pay for full-time workers.

The socialist Senator this past year introduced legislation in the Senate for the wage hike and while that didn't succeed (so far) has made the $15 wage call a standard platform item for most Democrats on the campaign trail. After all, if a $10 minimum wage hike is great, why not a $15 raise?.......

Going Bernie one better, Venezuela's Nicolas Maduro has raised the minimum wage 60% in his socialist country, using the exact same logic as Sanders. It's something like his 15th minimum wage rise since he took the reins of the presidency after the untimely demise of strongman Hugo Chavez in 2013, and definitely his fifth rise of 2017.......

That and a Maduro wage hike will buy you a cup of coffee.

Maduro's results are so meager because an inordinately large percent of the public with jobs has government jobs, financed by money-printing now that the oil industry is in default. The wage rise will require the printing of more money since Venezuela produces almost nothing otherwise of value and from there, the 3,000% or so inflation rate will go even higher - and the purchasing power of the workers will go even lower.

The right way to raise wages: send illegals home, dump oppressive regulations - - then allow the private sector to create enough jobs so competition for labor naturally increases wages.

Saw this on the internet; It’s so cold in DC that some democrats have been seen with their hands in their own pockets.

BTW, CA has passed a $15/hr law that will be phased in over the next several years.

Pretty soon everyone will be getting $15 an hour without the government mandating it. Once the flood of unskilled workers stop pouring into the country, employers will have to pay more to attract workers.

Oh wait, the Republicans may kill the cutting of immigration or the Democrats may prevail too.

They don’t work for us.

Minimum-wage hikes are only half of what caused Venezuela’s problems. The other half are the price controls.

A supplier can (somewhat) absorb a minimum wage hike if he can raise prices. You’ll get inflation, but you’ll still have products on shelves. Venezuela’s problem is that prices are fixed way below what it costs producers to produce those items.

To go full-Venezuelan, Bernie needs to also call for price controls. I’m sure that’s in his playbook down the line.

It really is that simple, but so many people just don’t get it.

Bernie needs a one way ticket to Venezuela & no right of return.

Maybe he can wake up. Take his wife with him.

Maybe she can find a University that she can plunge deeply into debt....like she did here in the USA.

By the time the CA min wage finally hits $15/hr they’ll need to raise it again; that is of course that there are jobs to be had.

Leaning Right :" Minimum-wage hikes are only half of what caused Venezuela’s problems.
The other half are the price controls."

Bloomberg just announced today that Venezuela will issue cryptodollars whereby each "Petro" (cryptocurrency) will represent one barrel of Venezuela oil.
Combine that with the minimum wage hike projected, it will be only natural to encourage more inflation since cryptocurrency inflates as demand grows.
For a Socialist country, it seems that Maduro envisions the "Petro" and electronic currency as a means of inventing new wealth.

Even if that really works, it won’t work for long. Like all fascists, socialists love top-down control. Anyone with more than X Petros will be forced to give them up. And anyone with less than X Petros won’t be able to buy anything because of inflation.

High government officials will be exempt from all that, of course.

The refusal to use common sense is criminal, if you raise wages then costs must go up proportionately ,i>as well as taxes. So those that you raised the minimum wage for are only better off by a minuscule amount as their sudden wealth is eaten up by taxes and higher costs and lost jobs because the employer has to maintain his income level and can only increase prices so far.

The other losers in this liberal largess are those on a fixed income, like Social Security or Disability that don't get any increase to offset those higher market prices. Of course liberals will insure that the illegals getting free money for all their anchor babies will get increases.

So who benefits? The government with higher tax collection and the Unions whose members wages are tied to the minimum wage. Who are the biggest losers? The elderly and every hourly wage worker that through hard work and experience pulled themselves up to the $15 per hour and above level that have their living standard lowered by socialist politicians.

Oh, the other thing that happens? When those that are boosted up to $15 realize that they are actually worse off because costs have gone up all around them, their job just got a lot harder at less hours(actually the lucky ones) or they lost their jobs because they were marginal workers and the employer can no longer afford to keep low producers on the clock.

And that's twenty five years of real world experience with minimum wage increase in the world of low skill employee management.

Remember, in America $15 per hour is the cost of servicing a union member at the national level. Union dues are usually one hours pay per month and 15$ is the break even point. The end game must always be known up front. Can’t organize people you can’t afford.

Use it for bartering. Venezuela has nothing to produce, their economy was based on oil.
