"Blade Runner 2049” was supposed to be a hit.
The film, one of the most anticipated of the year, seemed to have all the necessary ingredients with two popular leading men and an original that has gained cult status since its release in 1982. But it has not been the box office hit the industry hoped for, despite being showered with rave reviews.
Studios blamed the dismal box office performance of a number of big-budget blockbuster films this summer on negative reviews from critics and Rotten Tomatoes.
The film review aggregator, owned by Comcast Corp.-owned CMCSA, +0.87% Fandango, has been in the spotlight ever since. Last week legendary director Martin Scorsese wrote a guest column in the Hollywood Reporter criticizing Rotten Tomatoes and its impact.
But if well-reviewed films are also struggling commercially, can Rotten Tomatoes really be to blame?

Wonder why they stole the title of a completely different story for it too. (Neither movie was based on “The Bladerunner” by Alan Nourse, but on “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” by Philip Dick.)

I don’t go to movies much. Some people I know, who are into Netflix and video streaming and the wide screen TV, tell me they never go to movies, because they know they can see it in a couple months at home anyway.
I wonder how many people just don’t go to movies anymore due to such reasons.
No plot, no character development, lousy “leading men” actors, non-stop strobe lights flashing, things exploding, overblown special FX, recycled themes. Yuck, yuck, and more yuck.
Then the movie theater scene sucks big time. Bright cells phones all over, people talking, ENDLESS LOUD previews with strobe lights.
Where are the “leading men” like Fonda, Stewart, Wayne, Welles, Peck, Bogart, Grant, Crosby, Tracy, Cooper, Brando, Newman, Gable, etc. I honestly cannot think of a “leading man” actor in the past 30 years that rises to the stature of the movie actors of the 40s through 60s.
Movies were so much better years ago (and I’m talking in the 40s before I was born and in the 50s when I was too little to know about them and had no way to watch them even if I knew about them).
Movies and NFL — two sides of the same coin.
It was a three hour movie! I don’t want to sit around, no breaks in a theatre, no matter how comfortable for a movie. Broadway style show I might make it out of simple dynamics of the performance but a movie? Our home theatre is like floating on clouds in surround sound.
Even if the movie isn’t left wing crap, the chances are 99.9% the actors and actresses are left wing craps and they will crap all over you and your beliefs the first chance they get. They’ll harangue you about using too much toilet paper or using too much fuel...all the while flying their entourages half way around the world for a dinner.
We no longer go to movies. We have found we can wait and eventually see what everyone was raving about (not). Netflix does a fairly good job and often excellent job presenting new movies with an interesting twist.
Why should I watch movies done by people who have a hatred of who I represent...older, conservative, very well educated. We conservatives are very able to read, get to original sources and make deductions on our own. That coupled with the fact we are very interested in the direction this country is going, so why have people who despise us entertain us?
There is no entertainment as I define it in the movies. Lots of bad boys, bad cops, bad music...but little to stimulate thinking.
By the way, I think cops are great. I am grateful when they come around showing their presence. And when they protect, I am thrilled. Same with the Armed Forces. Yea for them all!!
I didn't go to Blade Runner because the previews looked boring, all CGI stuff. Besides, it won't be long until it's out on Redbox or Netflix.
I really don’t want to be around the 48% that voted for Hillary and support Kaepernick and BLM either.

There have been some great movies since the 50s and many good actors.

We used to go to the movies about once a month. Now it is maybe three times a year.
When we go we tend to see action movies that take advantage of the big screen and intense sound systems.
“Regular” dramas and comedies might as well be watched at home.
We have a new Flix Brewhouse in town. Great place. Comfy chairs, food service (very good food), craft brews. Took my son and wife to see the new Kingsman movie. It cost over $100 and the not so subtle political message wasn’t appreciated.
We’ll see the new Thor and Star Wars in a theater, but nothing else.
The first movie was boring, I suspect the “new” one will be to, so why go and be bored for $14?.
Look at my list — it is 40s, 50s, and some 60s. Things went downhill fast in the 70s.
Now, there's another thing to hate. The "upgraded" theaters have soft, reclining chairs and you have to choose a seat when you buy a ticket. It was much better to be able to choose a seat according to the dynamics of the audience. And those soft seats? Yuck. I worry about bed bugs and who knows what other pollutants were left behind.

“Popular” leading men is a totally misleading statement in this case. Harrison Ford was “popular”, twenty or thirty years ago, but is virtually retired at this point and probably not a big draw for younger audiences. Ryan Gosling may be “popular” with the ladies, but ladies aren’t usually the target demographic for sci fi films, and most guys I talk to despise him. I think this film is suffering badly from miscasting the lead.
