That scary-looking crosswind A 380 landing

Millions of people have been viewing and forwarding or posting an alarming-looking video (embedded below) of a giant A 380 airliner landing in heavy crosswinds at Dusseldorf. It’s scary-fun, but actually nothing unique to the Airbus or all that unusual. There is an entire genre of crosswind landings on YouTube. But owing to size, it is impressive.

Or, you can cut out the middleman altogether and go straight you YouTube and search A380 cr, and by that time, there is a list of videos, including this one.

Anyone with some free time should search "Kai Tak" on youtube for videos of landings at Hong Kong's former airport. On my first landing there I didn't know *anything* about it and when the pilot made one the sharp turns that Kai Tak was famous for I literally thought I was gonna die.

Those turns are probably where the phrase "Kai Tak Heart Attack" came from.

And you're so low and close to apartment buildings you can actually see into apartments...I had a window seat during that first landing.

Boy, he made a mess of it!
His goal was to get the plane flying down the runway center-line, yawed at an angle to counter the crosswind, and straighten up just before touchdown. He didn’t do that too well, ended up sliding sideways and then made the biggest mistake: a gross over-correction.

Muslim pilot that got really lucky he didn’t wreck his landing gear dancing on the rudder pedals.

I once flew from a smallish Iowa airport into O'Hare in a turboprop puddle jumper, and the winds at landing were something else ('twas truly a Windy City that day). That was the most alarmingly crabbed descent/landing I have ever experienced.

Nonetheless, the landing in the video would have scared me a lot more simply because of the size of the plane. I have an irrational unease about large aircraft.

You can get a similar experience at DC’s Reagan National Airport if the weather is bad and the approach is an ILS approach from the north. The aircraft is low enough and close enough to see the folks working in the tall building in Roslyn that’s next to the Iwo Jima memorial.

I nailed that landing at Kai Tak in Flight Simulator 2004...

...of course I ripped the wings off of 6 747's, put a couple more in the drink overshooting the runway, smashed some perfectly nice residential buildings with a few others..."virtually" killed thousands,

...but eventually, I nailed that checkerboard sucker!

It’s weird. Sometimes its clickbait, sometimes interesting stuff. This was both I guess.

Nothing special.

Go to youtube and search for crosswind landings and see 100 worse than that one.
