They are trying to defuse the situation because the networks are the ones who will take the initial Financial hit when they have to charge less for commercials based on reduced ratings. An estimate earlier this week looked at as much as 200 million less in TV commercial Revenue.
The right to free speech doesn't extend to the workplace. It's the NFL owners who have the free speech right to determine what is said by their football team when they are at work.
