I grew up very poor, carrying water from the spring, building fire in the cookstove and using an outhouse.

Been there and survived.

And a good pair of boots as back-up.

I suspect that substation supports a government facility.

I grew up very poor, carrying water from the spring(no city sewer/water bill), building fire in the cookstove(no propane/gas bill) and using an outhouse(no plumbing rip offs).

There are advantages....

Quark: Let me tell you something about Hew-mons, Nephew. They’re a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon. You don’t believe me? Look at those faces. Look in their eyes.

Hey, SubMareener, the world didn’t end yesterday. You were wrong. You were wrong for months. So, what did you do? Did you re-evaluate your false beliefs and admit your faults thereof before God?

No. You just continued in your errors and said the world would end today. Well, today might not be over, but it’s close to 5 PM in Jerusalem and the world is clearly not ending today.

So what will you do now? Will you finally re-evaluate your false beliefs and instead embrace what the Bible ACTUALLY SAYS? Or will you just “adjust” your false and vain and unbiblical calculations and say the world will end tomorrow, and then the day after that, and then the day after that?

Must say, the outhouse sure was cold in the winter.

But so we’re the bedrooms as they were never heated. My mother lived to just short of 98 and my father age 90 and never heated the bedrooms.

NYT, day late, dollar short.

Don’t they know the end of the world was yesterday.

The time for stories such as this was at least a week ago.

SirLurkedalot :" And a good pair of boots as back-up."

Hard copy paper maps are your friend if you are hoofing it on foot ,
as well as several pairs of cushiony outdoorsman socks,
and a small supply of rubber bands to keep chiggers, ticks, and mosquitoes from traveling up your pantleg or sleeves.

The biggest expense to live were the real estate taxes.

Electric was minimal.

My mom recalls putting bricks by the coal stove to get them hot, then putting them in a thick cloth pouch made for just that purpose, sort of like a small pillowcase, then taking it to bed with her. They all did, there was no central heat so they took the heat to bed with them. Between that and quilts so heavy you could barely move, it wasn’t cold so long as you stayed under the covers. This was in the WWII era when she was a child.

I’ve often joked that I grew up eating pheasant, quail, duck, goose, venison, and many of the delacies of today.

The worst part was biting into and having to spit out the lead shot.

Also ate groundhog, possum, muskrat... we hunted and trapped to survive, not just as sport.

There’s still time - more than you counted on - to repent of your false beliefs. Get to it.

The LAST route I would take out of an area is the interstate or major roads.

Some of the most enjoyable routes I have found were the result of backups on clogged interstates. Be sure to take a detailed paper map because GPS will only look for the shortest way back to the route you just left in desperation. The new route will not be the shortest distance but will be infinitely less frustrating and probably take less time overall.
