They need to be secured outside of the passenger compartment in a well-ventilated space. Most who transport extra fuel do so with containers affixed to the tailgate of overland-style SUV’s, using gas canisters designed for that purpose. Carrying home-style gas cans inside a vehicle over long distances is a recipe for disaster.

Thanks for the information.

Well, that is exactly what she did—She has a Camry sedan and used home-style gas cans sitting behind her on floor of rear passenger seat.

Good to know that there is a special gas can for transporting fuel...makes sense for boats, etc. I have one of those racks that fits on back of my SUV, so I guess I would be OK if I found the correct gas can.

in a few emergencies when i had no other option, i carried them in the trunk (gas cans) with a plastic bag tucked over them.
no way would i do that today. gas has a very high flash point.

So we should not plan/prepare because others are unpredictable and destroy all plans/preparations?

That is the very formula for becoming part of the problem.

We prep so that we can be a part of the solution, at least for our own families and those in our prepping circle.

As far as the unpredictability of others, they can do what they want. If they don’t want to prep and they want to starve when the SHTF, that’s their choice.

If their unpredictability leads them to try to take my supplies and parasite off my prepping (whether from unfriendly looting or friendly looting — those friends and neighbors who laughed in your face for years and said, “well, if anything does happen, I’ll come to your house”) then most of us are prepared to control their ‘unpredictability.’

Ghost of Philip Marlowe :" “well, if anything does happen, I’ll come to your house”) then most of us are prepared to control their ‘unpredictability.’"

There is no 'unpredictability' there; they are telling you outright what their intent is should they be faced with adversity.
OPSEC is the primary concept which should be foremost in your mind for your sake, and that of your family; neighbors and community can be provided for as you wish.
Don't forget that envy and greed are basic human characteristics, and that ethics get bent and contorted when it comes to basic survival.
Another concept is cache : storage of supplies in several locations should one supply depot be compromised.
In a "bug out" situation, cache your supplies enroute to your desired end location, strategically placed at comfortable travel intervals.
In a "bug in" situation, cache your supplies in several locations known only to you and your companion, again within a comfortable distance.
If you unable, or unwilling, to protect your home or cache supplies, you don't own them; that is where the sense of community can come together = mutual defense.

I appreciate your reply, insight and info. I’ve been studying prepping and doing as much as I can within my means. I don’t have a BOL or the means to obtain one at this point.

The only mistake that I made was entrusting my neighbors, who are also members of my church, my men’s fellowship/Bible study with the fact that I am prepping. I offered to teach them how to prep.

Little did I know that they’d eventually laugh about it and admit (indirectly) that they have no problem being what I call “friendly looters.”

Friendly looters are your neighbors, family members...anyone who happens to find out that you’re a prepper and thinks it’s silly but has a nagging voice that maybe they should do something, but don’t, and who plan on knocking on your door with their, “but my family is hungry” line.

Believe me, I was shocked. But I’ve learned that I’ll just have to turn them away with extreme prejudice. They’ve had years to prepare. I’ve told them what they should do (at a minimum). They have more money than I do and more space and could easily prep for the basics.

I’ll have no problem telling them that they laughed in my face despite the Biblical lesson of preparing for hard times and to kindly remove themselves from my property.

Yes, but it was an attack on the prepper.

It was propaganda for collectivism.

If the collective does not help the community of preppers to prepare but plans on parasiting off the preppers (to the destruction of the preppers), then they are the enemy.
