Jaguar cars set to go electric from 2020

Jaguar Land Rover will make all its new vehicles available in electric or hybrid models from 2020, it said on Thursday, two months after a similar announcement from Volvo.

The JLR group is the latest carmaker to embrace the move away from internal combustion engines in the wake of stricter government proposals after the Paris climate accord.

"We will introduce a portfolio of electrified products across our model range, embracing fully electric, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid vehicles," JLR chief executive Ralf Speth said.

Sweden's Volvo is also moving away from internal combustion engines, announcing in July that it plans to start phasing out production of conventional petrol-only cars from 2019.

British car manufacturer Aston Martin told the Financial Times in August that it wanted to equip all new models with electric batteries from the mid 2020s.

JLR is set to launch its first fully electric model, the SUV Jaguar I-Pace, next year.

The group, owned by Indian conglomerate Tata, told AFP in November 2016 that it intended to double its production of cars worldwide in future years.

British media reported that JLR's emphasis on electric cars in Britain, where most of its car production is based, could lead to the creation of 10,000 jobs in the country.

France and Britain have both recently said they would end sales of petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040 in a bid to reduce nitrogen dioxide (NO2) pollution.

One stumbling block in Britain is thought to be costs of providing recharge points on public highways, though Britain's plan promises to install charge points at motorway service areas and large fuel retailers.

Norway—where electric cars topped the sales charts for the first time in June—intends to restrict the sale of new vehicles with combustion engines from 2025.

I thought in the 90s they were trying to use the energy from breaking to generate electrical charge.

Don’t Britain and France also want to eliminate Coal and Nuclear power plants?

So, where is all of this electricity going to come from run all these electric cars?

The EuroLeftist royal presumption is that the Proles won't be driving. They will be assigned seats on public transportation, where they belong.

Anyone with a education in physics realizes that all those kilowatts now being used during the morning commute can't be generated by any conceivable power grid. In the Eurozone, where every village is within walking distance of the next village, has been for the last twelve hundred years, the peasants have always considered cars as a luxury.

I see this as an opportunity for a clever car builder, or a shade trade budding Henry Ford, here in the States. (Contingent on junking the staggeringly massive criminal federal overreach in legislated engineering...)

When I was a teenager my mom watched The Equalizer starring Edward Woodward. He drove a black Jag XJ6. My dream car became a black Jag. In 2006 I bought a new black Jag and still have it.

Death of a great marque. I’ll never forget the first time I fired up the ‘61 XKE a friend of my father’s lent me to use for my 14 day leave after boot camp in early 1968. Turn the key and wait for six or seven clicks of the electric fuel pump and punch the starter button. Best automotive vibrations ever conceived.

I sold my old Jaguar Mk2/340 to a guy in England, he only wanted it for the motor.

Nope!

They always looked fat, bloated and overweight.

Add to it their very poor handling and a less than comfortale ride, ‘vettes are pure overpriced junk...from GM.

btw, my first car was a ‘67 Mustang Fastback (Candy Apple Red w/289 & fold-down back seat)....turned out to be junk. I traded it at Hollywood VW/Porsche dealer and never bought an American car again.
