Gun-toting Texan going to CA in a week. Anything I need to know?

Posted on 09/03/2017 7:04:35 AM PDT by eastexsteve

We are gun-toting Texans who have to travel to California in about a week. We will be crossing the AZ/CA border on I-40. Is there anything we should know? I drove to CA on 1-10 in 1985 packing guns, and didn't have a problem then. Has anything changed?

I would avoid “da hood” in LA. Most of CA is still relatively safe.

figure out how to lock up / hide your gun when you cross into CA. You don’t want to get caught carrying it....red

Oh, come on. A big Texan like you ought to have more courage when entering big, scary California! But I would check out the gun laws before traveling.

Being north of I-10, you don’t have the Border Patrol interior checkpoints to worry about, but you are subject to the state Agricultural Inspection after you enter. They’re mostly looking for fruits/vegetables that could carry bugs, but I’m not sure if they also look for firearms.

Pistols have to be stored in a Cali approved locking container when in a vehicle, not a locking console...Ammo has to be stored separate in the trunk. Don’t ask, what if you’re in a van or a motorcycle? The geniuses haven’t answered that question yet.

Rent a locker in AZ and leave your gun/s there pick ‘em up on the way back.

firearm locked in trunk safe ok
do not carry in vehicle and do not bear arms, CA is no longer part of the United States of America (at least insofar as your constitutionally=recognized divine rights are concerned)

you could run into serious hassles if you attempt to keep and bear arms there

Make sure your magazines hold no more than 10.

Sad to say, but living as close to Cali as we do, (Tahoe area) I disarm the truck if we’re venturing across the state line. Not worth the risk to me. Of course we try not to venture across it if we can avoid it. NorCal not as bad but if you were to get stopped by the wrong LEO...............

The ag station on I-80 usually waves you past without stopping. And, there are plenty of routes that you don’t have to deal with them anyway.

If I recall correctly from when I lived there, you also have to have a trigger lock installed. The CHP is completely humorless and drunk on their power. Be careful there.

An LCP is totally illegal in CA, as is a Judge.

Leave those at home, unless you want to do a dime in Chino...

Go on-line and check the rules for any States you will be passing through. I keep a list/map of States with reciprocity with my State and any extra rules States may have for transporting weapons. Even though Federal rules that allow more common sense in transporting weapons, local cops can still make your life very complicated. When carrying through an “undesirable” State, I am always very careful to follow all traffic/speed limit rules to reduce the chance of meeting one of their LEOs....

Is there anything we should know?

Don’t pay attention to people from New York that live in New Jersey when it comes to advice to Texans going to California.
