Residents eager to share feedback on where New Orleans should establish stations for a new bike-share program have until June 18 to vote online for their preferred locations.
The city is working with the Brooklyn-based Social Bicycles, Inc., to spread 700 bikes among 70 stations this fall. City officials stated Friday (June 9) that the station locations selected will be assessed for feasibility, including space availability, 24-hour access, visibility and sufficient sun exposure for battery charging, once the final input is complete.
The bike-share program will be privately funded with sponsorships, advertisements and rental fees, officials stated. The fee model includes a $15 monthly pass; a $1.67 per month, or $20 per year, pass for low income residents; and the option to pay $8 per hour of riding. More details about the plan are located on the city's website.

Another thing, the article initially says the program is privately funded with sponsorships, advertisements and rental fees but farther down the article it says that Social Bicycles last year won a contract with the city to create the program. The company initially said $2.8 million is required to set up the program while $1 million a year would be needed to operate it. So which is it?
New Orleans has a whole lot of problems but yet they seem to have enough time on their hands to worry about memorials and bike sharing.
The places I used to ride my bike in New Orleans and the surrounding area was down the levee path on River Road from Orleans to Harahan then back. On the path along the Lake, from my house to City Park and back, and then sometimes I would ride from my house up Tulane avenue to the Canal St Ferry then cross over to the west bank.
But I did that on my own bike that I bought from GNO Cyclery, and I wouldn’t want to share it with anyone except my closest friends perhaps, and I don’t think I’d bike through New Orleans anymore. Kinda dangerous these days, I hear.
But at least I will not be assaulted by slave owning statues, thanks to Big Mitch, the Great Statue Slayer.
Right next to the Liberty Monument?
You say: “A month? A month? are your serious?” How about a less than a day? We’re talking NOLA here lad!
Place the bike racks in front bars. That would be fun to watch at night.
Bike sharing in NOLA? Oh my! that’s a good one!
On the trail to Nome Ak.
It is any wonder why the poor stay poor. Why work when you get all these freebies and deals. I sometimes think I am a schmuck for working when I see all the bennies going to the “poor”.
A good way to burn off some of those extra beignet and muffuletta calories.
Back in the early 70’s my mom volunteered as a tour guide at the old convent in the French Quarter. Earsalin? Something like that.
A few times a summer my buddy and I, 11 years old, would load our bikes into the car trunk and cross over on the ferry then spend all day riding around in the french quarter by ourselves.
Great memories of poking around the docks, the French Market when it was a dirty, grimy warehouse area and the old Jax brewery.
Bourbon street was an education.
You have your pride, and self-esteem that comes from something that’s actually real.
Not small things.
True. We all do here on FR. We are a hard working, America loving bunch for sure.
Semi Tough cycling club? Yea that’s pretty tough when you risk getting shot riding in that club.
They could make a reality show out of it.
I said a month at the most.
Given that it’s New Orleans, the best place for the bike sharing stations would probably be in the police stations.
I did add humor to the keywords.
About 20 years ago Phoenix did a bike sharing program.
All the bikes were stolen in record time.
It being New Orleans, a local citizen will shoot a Cracker, grab his pass, and get a free bicycle to sell. Sounds like a good business model to me.
