AAPL, -0.08% market capitalization of about $803 billion is 38% larger than the real GDP of Chicago, $581 billion in 2016. Apple isnt the only Silicon Valley notable to top Chicago (and all other U.S. cities save two), either. Google parent Alphabet GOOGL, +0.62% has a market capitalization of $657.9 billion, making its pockets about 13% deeper than the GDP of the home of deep-dish pizza.

The Market Caps of both Apple and Alphabet/Google exceeds the GDP of Chicago, Japan, and the Eurozone. Of course, while measuring Market Cap to GDP is comparing, er, value of the Trees to Apples, telling us basically nothing, it is an interesting metric. PING! But sounds neat to report it. Notwithstanding the fact that surpassed it a couple of years ago. They need a more recent metric that has been surpassed.

Do they include the value of government “services” in this calculation? If so, Apple’s market cap is probably triple that of Chicago.

How about comparing the number of murders on Apple property to the number in Chicago. Chicago wins bigly.

That’s GDP excluding drug sales, off-the-books gun sales, etc.

If all the un-registered firearms were valued, I think it may be a closer number.

And Apple has accomplished it with far fewer murders.
